Chadron and Hay Springs fire departments responded to a semi fire on Saturday, January 6 at 6:30 a.m., about 8 mi. east of Chadron.
Chadron Fire Chief Jack Rhembrandt said when his personnel arrived on scene, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. He requested a pumper and tanker from Hay Springs’ fire department. “Volunteers are great over there,” said Rhembrandt. “They are always willing to help and you should be proud of your guys over there.”
The cause of the fire was determined as the brakes on the truck’s drive axles. The semi was towing a load of pork meat, which was also ruled a total loss. Despite the flames that consumed the semi and trailer, Rhembrandt said the snow helped prevent the grass from igniting and contained the blaze to the roadside.
After several hours, crews were able to contain the blaze and left at 10:30 a.m.
