Val Jean McCabe, 62, died at his home on Sunday, April 29, 2012 in Alliance.
He was born on January 17, 1950 at Peoria, Illinois to Jean Valjean and Margaret E. (Lawler) McCabe.
He served two tours in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971 with the U.S. Navy and continued in the Reserves until 1974.
Val worked for BNSF Railroad in Alliance as an engineer, Road Foreman and Train Master from 1994 through 2010 when he retired. His history with the railroads starts in 1973 with the Santa Fe. He then worked on railroads in Alaska, the MRL in Montana, and in 1994 moved to Alliance where he met and married Muffy in 1999.
Val’s greatest hobby was his vintage car, a 1957 Chevrolet and if you had a beer he could fix anything that you brought to him.
He is survived by his wife Muffy Buckles of Alliance; son Brian McCabe of Chicago, Illinois, and daughter Tara McCabe of Pekin, Illinoi; and one sister Karen (McCabe) and Stuart Vinson of Beason, Illinois; three grandchildren, Cody, Austin and Jayden. One nephew, Darren (Christine) Peek and their son, Spencer and two nieces, Holly (Brian) Monday and Lisa (Michael) Vicary also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jean Valjean McCabe and Margaret E. Lawler McCabe, and one sister, Marcia McCabe Walker.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
