Freeman John Petersen

Freeman John Petersen, 87, of Gordon, Neb., passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017, in Gordon. He was born south of Rushville, Neb., on Oct. 22, 1929, to John and Martha (Sandoz) Petersen.

He attended the public schools of Sheridan County, Nebraska, where he was a lifelong resident. After high school, he worked on the family farm until he joined the Marine Corps where he served from 1951 to 1953 in a Military Police unit at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Joan Heiting

Funeral services for Joan Heiting (pronounced Jo-Ann) will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs at 2 p.m. with Rev. Paul Smith officiating.  Burial will be held at the Hay Springs City Cemetery.  A visitation will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church.

Wendell Leeper

Wendell Leeper, 72, of Valentine, Neb., died Friday, February 24 in Broken Bow, Neb.

He was born April 18, 1944, in Gordon, Neb., to William and Lola Leeper.  He attended school in Merriman, Neb., where he graduated in 1962.  Wendell worked for numerous ranchers in the area and spent his free time hunting and fishing all throughout the Sandhills of western Nebraska.

Wendell joined the service in 1964 where he was relocated to Germany.  In 1966 he was given the rank of Sergeant


Jeanette Audrey (Johnson) Hoffmann

Jeanette Audrey (Johnson) Hoffmann of Nenzel, Neb., passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Countryside Care in Gordon, Neb.

 She was born on July 20, 1934, to John and Margaret Johnson in Burwell, Neb.  She was the oldest of 9 children. After attending several elementary schools, she graduated from Ainsworth High School.  She was married to Russell E. Laughlin and they were the parents of Margaret Jean and Russell D. Laughlin. They resided in eastern Nebraska and Cody. 


Kyree Danielle Bassett

Kyree Danielle Bassett, 26, died on Feb. 7, 2017, in Gordon, Neb. She was born on Aug. 17, 1990, at Elmendorf AFB, Ark., to James Matthew Bassett and Sherrie Lee (Noble) Cookston.  Kyree received her high school diploma from Colorado and attended welding school. She worked various labor jobs but specifically enjoyed roofing.

She was a very helpful individual willing to go the extra mile for anyone, doing whatever she was capable of. Kyree loved animals so much that one time at the age of


Wayman (Boot) Stokley

Funeral services for Wayman (Boot) Stokley of Hay Springs, Neb., will be held on Saturday, March 4 at 10 a.m. at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Neb. Burial will be at Beaver Valley Cemetery in Hay Springs Neb.

Mr.Stokley passed away on Feb. 28, 2017, at Crestview Care Center in Chadron, Neb.

Wayman was born on Jan. 21, 1958.

He was 59.

Lyle Sones

Lyle Sones, 95, of Rushville, Neb., passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hay Springs, Neb.

Lyle was born Feb. 16, 1922, at Balfe, Neb., (south of Merriman, Neb.) to Edward and Laura (Knight) Sones. As a young boy, he lived with his family on a ranch south of Gordon, Neb. He attended rural school and graduated from Gordon High School, with the class of 1939.

On Oct. 17, 1942, Lyle enlisted in the Navy at Denver, Colo., and went to basic training at San Diego

Bernice was born on May 31, 1932, in Wisconsin and passed away on Feb. 17, 2017, at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs, Neb.

Bernice was married to David LaBelle in 1948 and had three children: Evelyn Roosa and Nancy Watkins of Florida and David LaBelle Jr. of Wisconsin. In 1959, she married William Leach of Gordon, Neb., and had two girls, Peggy Holsinger and Melissa Junge of Arizona.

Rickey Donald Cerny

Rickey Donald Cerny, 68, of Gordon died Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 18, 1948, in Gordon, Neb., to Fred and Alma Cerny. He was raised in Rushville and graduated from Rushville High School. He went on to school at Milford, Neb., and received his Associates of Applied Arts Degree in Auto Body Technology from Nebraska Vocational Technical School in 1969.

Wynfred E. (Mattes) Collins

Wynfred E. (Mattes) Collins was born to Fred and Lois (Sipp) Mattes April 20, 1917, on her parent’s farm near Winside, Neb. She passed away Feb. 19, 2017, at Gordon Countryside Care. She was baptized into the Lutheran church and also attended school in Winside, Neb.

On May 15, 1936, Wynfred was united in marriage to Archie L. Collins.  Born to this union were two children, Archie Fred and Mary Kay.  In 1942 the family moved to the Gordon area.  Settling at their present


Bob Smith

Robert (Bob) Smith, 60, of Chadron died Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, S.D. A celebration of life was held on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron with Pastor Steve Retzlaff officiating. Burial will be at Merriman Cemetery in Merriman, Neb.

Robert Larry Smith (Bob) was born Dec. 26, 1956, to Curtis N. and Goldie G. (Huckins) Smith in Rushville, Neb.

Charles William Evans

Charles William Evans was born Feb. 1, 1935, in Gordon, Neb., to Ted and Marcella Evans. He passed away Feb. 15, 2017, at Pioneer Memorial Rest Home in Mullen, Neb. He was 82.

He grew up in Gordon and went to school until the 9th grade. Then his father gave him permission to join the Navy at 17 years of age. He spent 4 years in the Navy and after 9 months, he enlisted in the Air Force. He had all his oversea duties done when he married his wife, Dorothy Loraine Caldwell, on June 8, 1962, in
