Hope Lucille Robins

Nearly 100 years ago, born to one of the early pioneer families of Sheridan County, Neb., Hope Lucille Robins arrived June 22, 1917, in a small sod and log house. She was the first child born to Bennett and Frieda (Pfisterer) Robins.  Hope was the eldest of four children and was raised on a cattle ranch north of Rushville, Neb.  Her grandparents, Benjamin and Lila (Abbott) Robins were the first couple to be issued a marriage license in Sheridan County.  On Friday, April 7, 2017


John D. Gealy

John D. Gealy, 87, of Gering, died on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., on Monday, April 10, 2017, at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Tyson Lambertson officiating. Mildred L. Young

Mildred L. Young passed away at age 94 peacefully March 30, 2017, with loving family by her side.

She was born Mildred La Rue Hart April 26, 1922, in Falls City, Neb., the second child to Perry T. Hart and Bessie June Stumbo- Hart.

She was raised on the family farm until she moved into town to attend high school.  She graduated from Gordon High School.  After graduation she married her high school sweetheart Virgil R. Young on Nov. 1, 1942, at the First Presbyterian Church in


Marilyn Radcliff

Marilyn Radcliff passed away peacefully on March 27 in Cheyenne, Wyo. She was born in Alliance, Neb., to Preston and Bernice Jensen. She was the third daughter of eight children. She married John Radcliff in 1954. To this union three daughters were born. Hailey Ellingham (Rhonda Radcliff) of Cheyenne, Cindy (Neal) Lein of Casper, and Judy (Andy) Keller of Upton.

Marly was a tender, compassionate sister, a sweet, loving mother and a friend to many. She was proud to be the grandmother of twelve


Steven B. Peters

Steven B. Peters, 58, of Hay Springs passed away suddenly at his son’s home in Thornton, Colo., on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Steve was born on Nov. 20, 1958, to Donald F. and Donna Mae (Finkey) Peters in Rushville. He was the youngest of four children raised on Mirage Flats. He attended Mirage Flats District 30 School through the eighth grade. He graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1977. He went to work for Farmer’s Co-op following graduation.

Maxine Gehrig

 Funeral services for Maxine Gehrig of Hay Springs, Neb., will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Hay Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Smith officiating.  Burial will be at the Gordon Cemetery.

Mrs. Gehrig passed away on March 18, 2017, at her home in Hay Springs.

Maxine was born on Dec. 12, 1934, in Gordon, Neb., to Cecil and Vera Dahlgren. She was 82.

For the first few years, she was called Sissy by everyone.  She grew up in the Sandhills


Bill Bruns

Bill Bruns, 83, was born on May 8, 1933, and passed into eternal rest on March 18, 2017.  Bill was born to Ludwig Lubben and Perna Zoe (Widman) Bruns in Gordon, Neb.; he was the youngest in the family of six.   His siblings; LeRoy (Helen), Pearle (Ken) Child, Glenn (Gwendolen), Alice Marie (Ted) Wellnitz and Kenneth (Sue) preceded him in death.

Alice Lilian Valaika

Feb. 24, 1924 – March 15, 2017

Alice Lilian Valaika, 93, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away on March 15, 2017. Alice was a resident of Gordon, Nebraska until September 2014 when Alice moved to Bradenton, Fla. where she resided at Waters Edge Retirement Community.

Alice was born on February 24, 1924, in Stepney, London, England to Henry (Harry) and Catherine Jarman. She met Raymond Edward Valaika, who was serving in the U.S. Army-Air Corps during World War II and was on leave in London


Barbara Lou Gale

Barbara Lou Gale, departed this life and entered into the presence of Jesus on March 11, 2017.

Barbara was born to Jake and Edith (Mitchell) Kime in Cornish, Colo. on May 17, 1927.  The Kimes bought a ranch North of Whitman in the Sandhills of Nebraska when Barb was two years old.  Barb grew up there, playing and doing chores with her three siblings.  Her mother gave her two precious gifts, her faith and a love for music.  Barb rode her horse to a one-room country school


Jean Evaline (Johnson) Norman

Jean Evaline (Johnson) Norman, the second of five children born to Cornelius (Neil) and Jean (Murray) Johnson on March 27, 1917, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, passed on March 14, 2017.  She and her eldest brother, Murray, began their schooling at a rural school in Alberta until the 5th grade.  Her brother was her main competition all the way through school.  At the age of nine, she and her family moved to the family farm at Rushville, Neb., where her dad had grown up and


Jim (James) Hutcheson

With deep sadness, we announce that Jim (James) Hutcheson of Gordon, Neb., died at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, S.D., Monday, March 13 at the age of 76.

His long physical sufferings came to an end, but Jim is missed by his friends and family. He is remembered for his quiet generosity, gentleness, and reputation for sharing jokes.  

Born in 1940 in North Platte, Neb., he graduated from Elsie High School in Elsie, Neb., in 1958 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Jim was proud of
