After having a disappointing weekend in Chadron the Gordon/Rushville wrestling team was out for revenge as they traveled to Bennett County last Thursday. With the cancelation of the Phillip 2-day tournament in mid- January, because of weather, the team was able to add this night of dualing three teams. The Mustangs came home beating not only the hometown hosts but also Todd County and Lyman County. With the varsity and junior varsity matches combined, the team only lost six of their 39 matches!
The 5 o’clock dual was against Todd County. Todd County’s only team points came from the four open weights the Mustangs had. The Mustangs won 50-24. At 113, junior, Garrett Shadbolt beat Jordan Weddell 3-0. Another junior, Cole Witt earned a victory over Hudson Pegrmorh winning 1-0, at 120. Freshman, Shane Child beat Taylor Coleman 13-2, at 126. Another freshman, Cody Darnell at 132, had a nail biting match pinning DJ Searbil. being down 8-9 with only 35 seconds left in the third. Junior, Casey Glassgow, at 138, pinned Conrad Goodvoice in the first period. Micah Scherbarth who is a first year wrestler for the G/R team but is a junior, came out strong at 145 pinning Kevin Swalley in the first period. Freshman, Kaden Russell hit the mat with controlling power pinning Joe Marshall in the first period. Second year, Tristan Tuma, wrestling at 160 beat Paul Young, 7-0. Junior, Ken Graham, wrestling at 170, pinned Bailey Derger in 3:53. The only senior on the team, Thomas Sandoz, who wrestles at 195, was injured at the Chadron Tournament. Coach House did not allow him to have any mat time in hopes to allow Thomas’ ankle to heal and be ready for February. The Mustangs’ last match for the dual was HWT Brice Stangle pining Josh Larrive in 35 seconds. JJ Hilliker was the lone JV match. This freshman looked impressive at 120 beating his opponent.
The Mustangs took on the hometown Warriors in the second dual. Shadbolt continued his winning ways by pinning Jagg Petrac early in the second period. Witt won by injury default over Adam Hahn. Child went 2-0 on the night by pinning Tyler Bayney in 27 seconds. Darnell continued his ways of keeping everyone on the edge of their chairs as he was trailing 4-8 at the start of the final period. He beat Cody Larson 14-9. Glassgow, had a rematch with Sam Ireland from the Chadron Invite. It looked like Casey was going to come out on top this time but ended up losing at the end, 1-2. Scherbarth had another victory by pinning Chandler Bakley in the first period. Kaden Russell, won 15-3 over Brady Hicks. Tristan picked up his second win of the night by pinning Brad Hahn with four seconds left in the second period. Graham beat Joe Merrival 4-1. Bryce was pinned at the last second of the first period by Sawyer Rous. The Mustangs won 40-26! JJ Hilliker had the only JV match once again. He beat his Warrior opponent.
The third and final dual of the night was with the Raiders from Lyman County; starting out again at 113, Garrett beat Bobbie Johnson with a tech-fall, 21-2. Jordon Jessop, controlled the entire match over Cole, beating him 18-3. Brady Janchew caught Shane off guard and pinned him in the first period. The 132 -pound weight was open for Lyman so Cody Darnell gained 6 points for the Mustangs. Casey pinned Hayden Schelske in 1:11. Micah followed suit by pinning Brady McManis in 45 seconds. Kaden Russell improved his record to 3-0 by beating Cole Schelske 6-0. Tuma lost a heart breaker to Lane Scott, 10-12. Graham, pinned Trevor Leboche in 1:08. Byrce had a bye to finish the night for the Varsity. They beat Lyman County 38-32. The night concluded with three more JV matches. JJ won his third match of the night. Kyle Mousseau was pinned by a Raider and Wrangler Youel pinned his opponent.
“I was very pleased the way the team wrestled tonight. I am encouraged with the way they are performing and hoping it continues to build for Districts.” Districts will take place on February 8th and 9th in Oxford.
