The Gordon-Rushville Mustangs squared off against the Hemingford Bobcats on Thursday night in the first round of the Western Trails Conference tournament in Hemingford. The Mustangs played well but came up short, fallling to the hosts 64-48.
The game started well for the Mustangs as they came out of the gate playing with focus and intensity. Kyle Anderson picked up two quick fouls early in the first quarter and was replaced by Barry Toczek. Toczek stepped up with eight points in the quarter as the Mustangs trailed just 17-16 heading to the second quarter.
The Mustangs continued to play very good basketball throughout the second quarter, but a couple of late turnovers led to Bobcat points and the Mustangs trailed 32-26 at the half.
In the second half, the Mustangs put together a solid effort, but Hemingford slowly pulled away as the third quarter ended with a Bobcat lead of 49-38. It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as the final score showed a 64-48 Bobcat advantage.
The Mustangs travel to Bridgeport on Friday before hosting Morrill on Saturday afternoon.
