Lady Hawks hope to carry momentum to post-season

By Lisa Hughes

The Lady Hawks split a pair of games last week, but are hopeful that a win in the final regular season game will help them carry some momentum into post season play.

The Hawks traveled on Tuesday for a match-up with the Crawford Lady Rams.  After playing to an 11 all tie at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Rams used a solid second quarter to take a 24-15 halftime lead.

The Lady Hawks cut the Rams lead to seven, 31-24, at the end of the third quarter, but were never able to get any closer in the final stanza losing a hotly contested 48-41 game.

The Lady Hawks were led by Stephanie Tlustos, who finished the game with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds.  She also added 5 steals.  Michaela Metcalf led the Lady Hawks on the glass with 8 rebounds.  Rylee Hanks led the Lady Rams with 13 points.

On a night filled with not just basketball, but also a lot of emotion, the Lady Hawks channeled that emotion into a 41-25 victory over the visiting Garden County Lady Eagles.  With the seniors playing their final home game, and the team dedicating their final home game to Coach Badje and his family, the Lady Hawks played inspired basketball on both sides of the ball.

The Lady Hawks led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, and stretched their lead just a little bit to 19-13 at the half.

The Lady Hawks were able to build a double digit lead in the third quarter at 32-22 and had their biggest lead of the game at 17 with 1:31 to go.  The Lady Eagles were able to trim that lead to the final margin of six with a desperation full court press but the Lady Hawks held on for the win.

The Lady Hawks got a double-double from senior Elizabeth Roberts, who finished the game with 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Senior Kodee Muhr came up just short of a double-double, finishing with 8 points and 10 assists.  She also finished with 3 steals.  Stephanie Tlustos had a strong game for the Lady Hawks, finishing with 15 points, including the Lady Hawks’ first 7 points in the game, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals.

The Lady Hawks finish the regular season at 7-13 and enter the D2-12 sub-district play as the #3 seed.  The Lady Hawks will open play against the Leyton Lady Warriors at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, at Mitchell High School. Look for results at www.sheridancountyjournalstar.net/
