The Gordon-Rushville Cross Country teams began their seasons competing in the Gering Invitational and the Chadron Invitational the past two weekends. The Mustangs competed well in the first two meets and are excited about the upcoming season. The young team is looking to improve from week to week as they get into better shape and become more experienced as there are a number of new runners on the team.
The Mustangs competed at the Gering Invitational on Friday, September 6 at the Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering. Dani Wellnitz led the way for the girls team as she placed 7th, running a time of 22:11. Robin Ferguson(25:26), Rachel Johnson(26:44), and Becca Wellnitz(30:06) rounded out the varsity runners at the meet. In the J.V. race, three newcomers competed for the Lady Mustangs. Chloe Meng placed 13th in a time of 26:02 followed by Maddi Cox(27:45) and Audra Johns(29:52).
In the boys division, Mace Bixby led the way for the Mustangs. Mace finished in 39th place in a time of 21:00. Michael Barth(24:13) and J.J. Hiliker(26:41) ran for the Mustangs in the Varsity race as well. In the J.V. race, Juan Sanchez finished in a time of 21:53 good for 20th place. Justice Flick(26:13) and Wade Bergman(27:40) rounded out the J.V. boys runners.
Ryan Wellnitz finished 24th in a time of 12:56 with Darrin Archibald(13:29) only about 30 seconds behind him. Michael Tiensvold crossed tape in 14:50. In the girls race, Reann Ferguson(13:42) and Autmn Richards(13:46) finished 16th and 17th respectively. Callie Shultz rounded out the girls team finishing in a time of 15:43.
On Saturday, September 14, the Mustangs traveled to Chadron to compete in the Chadron Invitational at Chadron State College. The team showed improvement as almost every member of the team who ran bettered his or her time, with several runners knocking almost a minute off of their times. In the varsity girls race, Dani Wellnitz was victorious winning in a time of 21:13. Rachel Johnson(24:43) and Robin Ferguson(24:50) finished in 20th and 21st place respectively. In the J.V. race, Becca Wellnitz finished in the medals with a 10th place finish in a time of 28:17. Audra Johns competed the course in a time of 31:55.
Five Mustang boy runners competed in the varsity race for the boys. Mace Bixby was the first to finish for the Mustangs in a time of 20:09. Freshman Juan Sanchez also ran well finishing 27th in a time of 20:54. Michael Barth(22:25), J.J. Hilliker(25:49), and Justice Flick(26:37) rounded out the Mustang finishers in the varsity race. David Birkbeck(25:16) and Wade Bergman(26:44) competed in the J.V. boys race for the Mustangs.
Autumn Richards placed 5th in the J.H. girls race finishing in a time of 11:39. Reann Ferguson(12:37) and Calie Shultz(14:40) rounded out the J.H. girls runners. In the boys division Ryan Wellnitz finished 19th in a time of 11:31. Darrin Archibald(12:09) and Michael Tiensvold(13:46) ran for the Mustangs as well.
The Mustangs will run again next Saturday at the Alliance Invitational and hope to continue showing improvement. “I was pleased with the improvement I saw from the first meet to the second meet,” commented Coach Nelson. “With a young team, learning to practice hard every day will be key to our success,” he added.
