Lady Mustangs Win Conference Championship

The Gordon-Rushville cross-country teams competed in the Western Trails Conference Invite on October 11 at the Court House and Jail Rock Golf Course in Bridgeport. The cold and gusty winds made it hard on the runners, but everyone stayed tough and ran great races. The Lady Mustangs led the way winning their third consecutive conference title. The boys team had a good showing as well, placing third in the team standings. There was no team score in the J.H. division, but the J.H. runners competed well placing four runners in the top ten.

Dani Wellnitz led the way for the girls team winning her third conference championship in as many years. Her time of 21:20 was nine seconds faster than the second place finisher, Jessie Smith, of Bayard.  Robin Ferguson (24:18) and Rachel Johnson (25:25) just missed top ten finishes placing 11th and 12th place respectively.  Maddi Cox (25:52), Becca Wellnitz (26:41), and Audra Johns (27:31) rounded out the Lady Mustang runners. Cox, Wellnitz, and Johns finished 14th, 15th, and 16th giving the Lady Mustangs a narrow two-point victory over Bridgeport for the team championship.

In the boys race Juan Sanchez paced the Mustangs. Juan fished in 10th place in a time of 20:09 making him an all-conference performer. Mace Bixby was the second Mustang runner to cross the finish line in 20:20 for a 14th place finish. Michael Barth (21:23) and David Birkbeck (22:00) placed 20th and 26th respectively. Rounding out the Mustangs runners were Wade Bergman (23:23), J.J. Hilliker (24:01), and Justice Flick (24:07). The Mustangs finished in third place in the team standings just three points behind the runners-up Hemingford.
