Mustangs win Western Trails Conference title at home

The Gordon-Rushville Mustangs hosted the 2014 Western Trails Conference Wrestling Tournament in Gordon Thursday, January 9, and captured the team title by 4.5 points with 161.5! Other teams competing were: Bridgeport, finishing second with 157; Sidney, third with 136; Bayard, fourth with 118; Mitchell, fifth with 103.5; Kimball, sixth with 78; Hemingford, seventh with 56; Morrill, eighth with 54; and Banner County, ninth with 12 points.

At 113 pounds for the Mustangs, Garrett Shadbolt finished second on the day. In the first round Shadbolt beat Rowdy Keller of Kimball 2-1. In round two, Shadbolt fell to Drew Gilliland of Mitchell in 5:03.

Logan Belskey also finished second in the meet at 120 pounds. Belskey defeated Zac Swanson of Mitchell in the first round by major decision, 14-3. In round two, he fell to Garrett Ryan of Kimball in 4:59. In the third round, Belskey pinned Austin Huddle of Hemingford in 2:54.

Cole Witt was the Mustangs’ first champion at 126 pounds, winning with all pins. Witt received a bye in the first round. In round two, Witt pinned Eduardo Nevarez of Hemingford in 4:35. Witt went on to pin Logan Stahla of Kimball in 1:25 in round three. In the semi-final match, Witt pinned Austin Storbeck of Sidney in 5:00. In the championship match, Witt pinned Peyton Baumann of Bridgeport in 1:24 to take first place.

Justin Hilliker took sixth at 132 pounds. Hilliker received a bye in the first round. In round two, Hilliker fell to Robert Niezwaag of Bayard in 4:14. In round three, Hilliker fell to Joseph Weibert of Bridgeport in 0:43. In the semi-finals, Hilliker pinned teammate, Mace Bixby in 1:31 before losing a close match to Adrien Dally of Bridgeport 5-4 to take sixth.

Mace Bixby took seventh at 132. Bixby fell to Justin Mohr of Kimball in the first round in 2:46. In round two, Bixby fell to Zach Borges of Sidney in 1:36. In round three, Bixby fell to Adrien Dally of Bridgeport in 3:06. Bixby was then pinned by teammate, Justin Hilliker in 1:31 to finish seventh.

Shane Child finished sixth at 138 pounds. In round one, Child lost to Lee Jespersen of Hemingford 10-6. In round two, Child fell to Robert Miller of Bayard in 2:59. In round three, Child fell to Wesley Christensen of Bridgeport in 1:05. Child then defeated Patraic Hays of Sidney 6-4, before falling to Lee Jespersen of Hemingford in 0:43 to finish 6th.

Casey Glassgow took second at 145 pounds. Glassgow pinned Ruger Lewis of Kimball in the first round in 4:23. In round two, Glassgow pinned Malachi Belford of Bayard as time ran out in the first period. In round three, Glassgow defeated Michael Muggli of Sidney 5-0. Glassgow beat Abe Hernandez of Mitchell by tech fall, 16-0, in the semi-finals, before taking a tough, 8-7 loss to Brandon Nichols of Bridgeport in the championship match to finish second.

Micah Scherbarth was the Mustangs second champion at 152 pounds. Scherbarth pinned Kyle Spicer of Kimball in 1:53 in round one. In round two, Scherbarth defeated Todd Widener of Bridgeport 2-0. In round three, Scherbarth pinned Ephraim Blanco of Mitchell in 3:39. Scherbarth pinned Lukias Higer of Sidney in 2:55 in the semi-final match before winning the championship match on an injury default from teammate Tyrel Denton.

Tyrel Denton took second at 152 after an injury default to teammate, Micah Scherbarth, in the championship match. In round one, Denton pinned Garrett Zwiebel of Morrill in 5:47. In round two, Denton pinned Lukais Higer of Sidney in 2:21. In round three, Denton pinned Tarin Jespersen of Hemingford in 3:59. In the semi-final match, Denton pinned Todd Widener of Bridgeport in 4:45.

Tristan Tuma finished third at 160 pounds. Tuma pinned Marquis Droddy of Mitchell in 1:33 in the first round. In round two, Tuma fell to Lawrence Schneider of Bridgeport in 2:11. In round three, Tuma pinned Ryan Nieto of Sidney in 3:41. In the semi-finals, Tuma lost to Trenton Applegate of Bayard 6-0. In the consolation match, Tuma pinned Brody McKnight of Sidney in 2:02 to take third place.

Ken Graham was the champ at 170 pounds. After a bye in the first round, Graham pinned Alex Maestas of Sidney in 1:04 in round two. In the third round, Graham defeated Elverist Gomez 4-3 with a last second score. In round four, Graham pinned Trenton Strawder of Mitchell in 0:33. In round five, Graham pinned Jerrod Fedorchik of Bridgeport in 3:18.

Taylor Hood took fourth at 182 pounds. Hood narrowly defeated Jeremiah Wurm of Bayard 10-8 in sudden-victory overtime in round one. In round two, Hood fell to Braydon Wiedeman of Mitchell in 1:06. In round three, Hood fell to Cody Hofrock in 4:45. In round four, Hood fell to Brandon Lulf of Sidney in 5:12.

The Mustangs’ Brice Stangle took fourth at 285 pounds. Stangle pinned Dominic Beyer of Sidney in 0:20 in the first round, before receiving a bye in the second. In round three, Stangle fell to Zaine Gallegos of Bayard in 1:03. In the semi-final match, Stangle lost to Matthew Hessler of Morrill 2-0. Stangle again faced Gallegos in the consolation match, this time falling in 3:17 to finish fourth.
