The Hawks boys basketball team put together a great second half of the season and advanced to the sub-district final before falling to the Arthur County Wolves in the sub-district final Thursday night in Sutherland.

The Hawks opened sub-district play as the #3 seed and defeated the second seeded Creek Valley Storm 48-34. The Hawks fell behind 4-0 in the first quarter, but after a late first quarter run took the lead for good 10-8 in the first.

The Hawks led 22-17 at the half but used a huge 16-2 third quarter to build a 38-19 lead with one quarter to play. The Storm would outscore the Hawks in the final period 15-10, but it wouldn’t be near enough as the Hawks held on for the 14 point victory. “We played great team defense,” said Coach Derek Ginn. “We controlled the game halfway through the first quarter when we took the lead for good.”

Austin Weyers led the Hawks with a double double finishing with 10 points and 15 rebounds. He also added 3 steals and 4 blocks. Seth Badje went 5 of 11 from the behind the arc and finished the game with 21 points to lead the Hawks in scoring. The Storm was led by Luke Cavalli with 15.

Thursday night in Sutherland, the Hawks took on the #1 seed Arthur County Wolves in the sub-district final. The Wolves raced out to an early 17-9 lead, and extended that lead to 10 at the half 30-20. The Hawks put together a good third quarter and were within one late in the quarter on the strength of 10 third quarter points from Seth Badje before the Wolves ended the quarter up by three 37-34.

The Hawks pulled to within two points of the Wolves four separate times in the fourth quarter, but due to late game foul trouble, just didn’t have enough offense on the floor at the end of the game and ended up falling 50-41. “I am proud of the Hawks,” said Coach Derek Ginn. “They set a standard of excellence and worked to achieve it everyday. We will miss seniors Marc, Dustin, Seth, and Dylan next season as they provided great leadership throughout the season.”

The Hawks were led by Seth Badje with 20. Austin Weyers also added 12 points and 8 steals. Hunter Walker led the Wolves with 19. Jordan Trimble added 13. As a side note, Leyton beat Arthur County 49-44 Tuesday night in the District final to advance to the state tournament next weekend.
