The Hay Springs Lady Hawks started the post-season with a big 46-28 win over the Sioux County Lady Warriors in the opening round of the subdistrict D2-12 bracket Tuesday night in Gordon.
After a fairly even first quarter, the Lady Hawks began to pull away in the second and never looked back. The Hawks really stepped up their defense, allowing only four points in both the second and third quarters. Hay Springs never allowed the Lady Warriors to find their rhythm, stealing the ball away 16 times in the game.
By the fourth quarter, the Hawks held a commanding 37-19 lead and sent some of the younger girls into the game, giving all five starters some rest.
Whitney Heiting was named Player of the Game for the Lady Hawks. Heiting scored 11 points, and had 8 steals and 7 rebounds. Kate Roberts lead the Hawks in scoring with 15, and had 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Emma Roberts scored 6, with 2 rebounds and 1 steal; Hailey Summers scored 5 and had 4 rebounds; Cydney Jancik 4 pts., 2 reb., 1 steal; Tanna Badje 4 pts., 5 reb., 3 steals; Katrena Ryan 1 pt., 1 reb., 1 steal; Jen Scherbarth 2 reb.; Ciara McCance 1 block.
With the win, the Lady Hawks advance to face the Crawford Lady Rams in the subdistrict championship game Thursday night in Gordon at 6 p.m. The 19-3 Rams took down Cody-Kilgore 53-23 in the first round. The Hawks faced Crawford at home just last Thursday, taking a 47-25 beating. They will need to bring all their energy from Tuesday night and then some if they want to advance to the district final.
