Jr. Hawks busy with three meets

The Jr. High Hawks track teams were very busy over the past week and a half.

The Jr. Hawks competed in the Gordon-Rushville meet on Thursday, April 26, the Panhandle Conference meet in Chadron on Saturday, and the Morrill Invite on Tuesday, May 1. In the Gordon-Rushville meet the Lady Hawks finished 4th of 8 teams with 54 points. Katrena Ryan led the Jr. Hawks with a 1st place finish in the high jump with a jump of 4’, and a 3rd in the 200 meter dash. Ciara McCance finished 2nd in the 200 meter hurdles and 3rd in the 75 meter hurdles. Emma Roberts also placed in the 75 meter hurdles with a 6th place finish, and also added a 5th place in the long jump with a jump of 11’1.” Sydney Tlustos picked up a 3rd in the discus with a throw of 60’3” and a 5th in the shot put with a throw of 21’ 2 1/2.” Alexis Olson rounded out the Jr. Lady Hawks team scoring with a 3rd in the 200 meter hurdles.

For the boys, Austin Reed finished the day with four placings. Reed won the triple jump with a jump of 33’4,” finished 2nd in the 100 meter dash, 3rd in the 200 meter dash, and 4th in the long jump. Daniel Hunzeker had a good day with three 5th place finishes in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 800 meter run, and also was a member of the mile relay team that finished 3rd. Other members of the mile relay team were Wes Tlustos, Tony Morrison, and Garrett Weyers. Kaelob Marx finished the day with a 4th in the 400 meter run, a third in the 200 meter dash, and was a member of the 4th place 400 meter relay. Garrett Weyers was the runner-up in the triple with a jump of 29’10.” Jake Johnson finished 4th in the same event and was a member of the 4th place 400 meter relay team. Drew Letcher and Kobe Encinia were the other members of the relay team. Scoring the teams final points was Dakota Heiting who finished 6th in the 1200 meter run. The boys squad finished 3rd of 7 teams with 62 points.

On Saturday, the Jr. Hawks participated in the Panhandle Conference track meet held in Chadron. Despite a few delays due to the weather, they were able to finish the meet. Katrena Ryan was the Lady Hawks only champion with a first place finish in the high jump, but many other Lady Hawks placed in the meet. Ryan also added a 2nd in the 100 meter dash and was a member of the 400 meter relay. Other members of that relay were Ciara McCance, Emma Roberts, and Kristen Rathe. Kristen Rathe finished 3rd in the long jump with a jump of 11’9 1/2” and 5th in the 400 meter run in 1:22.2. Sydney Tlustos placed in both of the weight throws with a 2nd in the discus, and a 4th in the shot put.

At the Morrill meet on Tuesday, May 1, the only Jr. Hawks that placed were Austin Reed and Garrett Weyers. Reed won the triple jump with a jump of 34’6” and was 5th in the 100 meter dash in 13.18 seconds. Garrett Weyers finished 6th in the triple jump with a jump of 32’5.”
