Hawks send six to state track

The Hawks and Lady Hawks track teams will be sending six athletes in five events to the state track meet in Omaha this weekend. The Lady Hawks qualified their two mile relay team which has been placing high at every meet this season, and Jerilyn Scherbarth will be competing individually in the two mile.

 

The Lady Hawks won the two mile relay at Chappell in 10:57 last Wednesday. Relay runners were Michaela Metcalf, Jenn Scherbarth, Brittany Ferguson, and Jerilyn Scherbarth. The alternate for the state meet will be Kerisa Marx.

Jerilyn Scherbarth finished in second place in the two mile in a time of 13:51 to qualify for state for her second straight year. Scherbarth also finished 4th in the 800 meter run and was a member of the 5th place mile relay team. Other mile relay team members were Michaela Metcalf, Jenn Scherbarth, and Brittany Ferguson.

Kerisa Marx finished 4th in the high jump. Michaela Metcalf place 4th in the long jump and 4th in the triple jump. Whitney Heiting finihsed 6th in the triple jump with a jump of 29’ 1/4”. Ferguson, who ran on three relays also finished 4th in the 400 meter run.

Rounding out the team scoring for the girls was the 400 meter relay who finished 5th in 58.0 seconds. Relay members were Ferguson, Cydney Jancik, Jenn Scherbarth, and Heiting. The girls squad finished 7th as a team.

For the boys, Austin Weyers led the Hawks by qualifying in two events. Weyers was the triple jump champion with a jump of 41’ 4 1/2” and finished second in the long jump with a jump of 20’ 4”. This will be Weyers third straight year at the state meet.

The Hawks other qualifier is Stevin Horrocks who received a wild card in the 300 meter hurdles. Horrocks got the second wild card after finishing 3rd at Districts in a time of 42.8 seconds. Horrocks also finished 3rd in the 110 hurdles and 5th in the 100 meter dash. Horrocks, just a sophomore, is making his second trip to the state meet.

John Rotness just fell short of qualifying for the state meet by finishing 3rd in the high jump with a jump of 5’10”. Two other boys relays finished high but didn’t qualify. The mile relay team finished 2nd in a time of 3:54.4, but only the first place relay team goes to state. Relay members on the mile relay were Chris Ray, Austin Weyers, Joey Johnson, and Jordan Houser.

The 400 meter relay team finished 4th in 49.3 seconds. Members of that relay team were Ray, Weyers, Houser and John Rotness. The boys squad finished 4th of 10 teams. The Nebraska State track meet will be held Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19 in Omaha. Good luck Hawks!
