The Mustangs are a game away from the state tournament after a thrilling 42-39 overtime defeat of the Chadron Cardinals in the C1-12 subdistrict final in Alliance Thursday night. The Mustangs advance to the District C1-6 final to face Gothenburg (21-7). If the Mustangs can win that game, or be one of two wildcard teams, it would be the first trip to state since the schools consolidated (Rushville last went in 1960, losing to Fullerton in the first round.)
Both teams got off to a slow start Thursday night, with the Mustangs holding a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Chadron held the Mustangs to just one free throw in the second quarter while scoring seven of their own to take a 17-16 lead into halftime. The Cardinals extended their lead by three in the third, 32-28.
The Mustangs were able to tie things up with the Cardinals in the fourth, and had possession with time dwindling, but were unable to capitalize – sending the game into overtime tied at 37.
Chadron struck first with a two just inside the arc, but Ryan Schwarting answered back with a three to give the Mustangs the lead. Schwarting added two free-throws later to seal the win 42-39.
The Mustangs will face a tough Gothenburg team who defeated Ogallala 61-38 Thursday night. The District Final will likely take place in Sidney Monday evening, Feb. 29. Watch it live in HD Video Here!

Loved the defense; Chadron couldn't get into their offense.Nelson made some good decisions with the ball late in the game, and Conroy and Campbell were beasts.
