Mustang football team has rough opener

The Mustangs have a tough game against Valentine. The Mustangs have a tough game against Valentine.

The Gordon-Rushville football team had their hands full as they opened the 2016 season with a 19-0 loss to the Valentine Badgers in Gordon on Friday night.  The Mustangs got a few breaks, but couldn’t convert them into points against a big, physical Badger squad.

Valentine returned the opening kickoff to the Mustang 46 yard line, then marched down the field for a touchdown to lead 7-0 with 9:45 left in the first quarter.  The Mustangs failed to gain a first down and Valentine took over on their own 38 yard line after the punt.

The Mustang defense bent without breaking on the Badgers’ second drive as they gave up some yards, but intercepted Valentine in the end zone and gave the ball back to the offense.  The Mustangs were again forced to punt the ball away and Valentine took over at their 31 yard line with 4:07 left in the first quarter.  Valentine scored again with 9:54 left in the second quarter to take a 13-0 lead after a missed PAT.

The teams traded punts for the rest of the second quarter, but the Mustang defense came up big again with a Sean Combs interception on the Mustang 43 yard line.  The Mustangs only had 42 seconds to work with and couldn’t put any points on the board and the score held at 13-0 at the half.

The Mustangs punted on their first possession of the third quarter, but Valentine marched 71 yards to add to their lead with another touchdown.  Another missed PAT made the score 19-0.

The Mustangs’ special teams came through with a blocked punt on the next Valentine possession and took over on the Valentine 34 yard line.  Gordon-Rushville just couldn’t find an offensive rhythm and failed to score on what would be their best scoring opportunity of the night.  The teams again traded punts until time ran out and Valentine took home the 19-0 win.

The Mustangs will be in action on Friday when they travel to Kimball to take on the Longhorns.  The Mustangs surprised Kimball last year on opening night and hope to come away with a road win on Friday night.  You can catch all the action on www.sheridancountyjournalstar.net
