The first round of the Western Trails Conference was held at home for the Gordon-Rushville girls basketball team on Thursday, February 2.
Coach Randy Hurlburt said “We had to focus on many different skills to prepare for WTC as the teams we had to play have very different strategies. I feel our team is very talented, and if we ever put it all together in the same game, we are going to be tough to beat.”
The Mustangs took on the Kimball Longhorns for the first round. The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Longhorns 23-6 in the first quarter, and Kimball was never able to recover from the 17 point deficit. The Mustangs won 65-49. Gordon-Rushville advanced to play Mitchell in the second round.
On Friday, the Mustangs took on the Tigers at Western Nebraska Community College. When the first quarter ended, the Mustangs were getting beat 16-2. After battling back, the Lady Mustangs were down by five as the clock dwindled down at the end of the fourth quarter. Josie Perez shot a three-pointer as the buzzer rang, but this wasn’t enough to take a lead. The Tigers beat the Mustangs 50-48.
In the consolation game for third and fourth place, Gordon-Rushville took on the Morrill Lions. The end of the first quarter resulted in a tied ballgame with a score of 9-9. At halftime, the Mustangs were beating the Lions by two points. In the next half, the Mustangs held the Lions to 11 points while they scored 35. In the end, the Lady Mustangs won 70-44 to take third place in the Western Trails Conference tournament.
