Thursday, February 2, marked the beginning of the 2017 Western Trails Conference basketball tournament.
The Gordon-Rushville boys took on the Bayard Tigers during the first round at home. The Mustangs never let the Tigers score more than eight points in a quarter, and in the end, the Mustangs came out on top with a score of 65-31. This advanced them to the winner’s bracket.
The next day, Friday, February 3, the boys played the Bridgeport Bulldogs at WNCC in the semi-final round of the tournament. Bridgeport beat the Mitchell Tigers in the first round the previous day to advance to take on the Mustangs. Gordon-Rushville never let the bulldogs take a lead and beat them 46-37.
Winning against Bridgeport gave the Mustangs a spot in the Championship game on Saturday against the Hemingford Bobcats.
The boys continued to focus on the little things and played hard throughout the tournament. “Our defense was great, we did a good job of taking care of the ball, and we did a good job of rebounding,” said Coach Joel Nelson.
Gordon-Rushville quickly took a 22-5 lead during the first quarter. The Mustangs continued to battle for the trophy. Sean Combs scored 24 points in the championship game on 9-9 shooting, which included a 3-point shot. With a final score of 64-36, Gordon-Rushville won the WTC Boys Basketball Tournament for the second year in a row.
“Winning the WTC Conference Tournament has been a goal of the team all year,” said Coach Nelson.
