Mrs. Jana Binger has been named as the Hay Springs Lady Hawks volleyball coach for the 2012-2013 school year, replacing longtime coach Lisa Hughes.
Coach Binger has several years of volleyball experience and knowledge to bring to the Lady Hawks. She played for four years at Chadron High School and a year at Chadron State College before moving to the east coast, where she played six years of beach/sand volleyball under well-known volleyball coach and referee, Mary Lou Marshall.
Although she is excited about the upcoming season, Binger said that the team will have to be flexible and able to adapt to new styles. The current players have been coached by Hughes for their entire volleyball career and Coach Binger admits, “I can’t coach like the other coach did.” Every coach has their own unique style to pass on to their team.
The Hawks have had several “open gym” days where Binger has had the opportunity to watch the girls practice as she learns who the strong hitters and setters are on the team.
“It’s just like getting a new teacher, things will be different for everyone,” said Binger, “We are all adjusting.” The Lady Hawks’ first match had been inadvertently scheduled over the Labor Day weekend and is currently being rescheduled.
Binger is in her second year of teaching 2nd grade for the Hay Springs School District. Previously she taught at Wolf Creek (1 year), Rushville Elementary (3 years) and Chadron (1 year) before taking her current position in Hay Springs. She and her husband Brandt have lived south of Hay Springs for the past 10 years and have three children: Ciara, a 7th grader; Bradon, a 2nd grader; and their three year old daughter, Kya.
