Hawks open delayed season with win

By Lisa Hughes
The Hawks appeared to put that extra week of practice to good use Friday night, coming up with a convincing 36-6 victory over the Edgemont Moguls of South Dakota.
The Hawks were originally scheduled to open their 2012 season at home against Rapid City Christian on Friday, August 31, but due to the wildfires in the area the game was postponed until October 8.  The Hawks scored early in the first quarter when quarterback Regg Strotheide hit Joey Johnson for a 34 yard touchdown pass.  Stevin Horrocks scored the Hawks two point conversion and the Hawks led 8-0 with 9:35 still left on the clock in the first quarter.
The Hawks scored again with 1:18 left on the clock on a pass from Strotheide to Horrocks who scrambled 65 yards. Horrocks also got the call on the two point conversion and the Hawks held a 16-0 first quarter lead.
The Hawks scoring in the second was fast as Austin Weyers went 28 yards for the score with 11:46 on the clock.  This time the points after failed and the Hawks extended their lead to 22-0.  With three minutes left in the quarter Strotheide again hooked up with Weyers on a 69 yard bomb to give the Hawks a 28-0 lead at the half.
The Hawks put their final score on the board with 6:47 left in the third quarter when Horrocks scored on the ground with a 32 yard run.  Strotheide connected with Johnson for the two point conversion to give the Hawks a 36-0 lead.  Edgemont finally got on the scoreboard with 1:10 left in the third quarter on a 15 yard rushing touchdown by Miles Englebert.  Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks were able to get a lot of personnel in the game to gain valuable experience.
Defensively, Stevin Horrocks led the Hawks with 12 tackles and 1 sack.  Joey Johnson and Jordan Houser each added 7 tackles.  Johnson also added an interception.  John Rotness and Levi Ray contributed 6 tackles and Ray added an interception.  Austin Weyers also finished the game with a blocked punt that was recovered by Riley Abbott in the second quarter.  The Hawks will be on the road again at Hemingford on Friday, September 14.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
