A big first quarter by the Warriors doomed the Hawks Friday night in Leyton, as they fell behind 20-0 after the first twelve minutes of play. Leyton’s Jared Westman did the damage early in the quarter scoring on a 10 yard run and a 7 yard run with seven minutes still left on the clock. With 3:52 left on clock, Sam Schumacher scored on a big 41 yard run to round out the Warriors first quarter scoring. The Warriors made good on just one of their three extra point attempts.
Neither team could get anything going early in the second quarter until Regg Strotheide hit Austin Reed on a 15 yard pass with 5:36 left in the quarter to put the Hawks on the scoreboard. The extra point attempt was no good, and the Hawks trailed 20-6 with five minutes left in the half. With 1:42 left in the half, Leyton’s Schumacher again took the ball 50 yards to paydirt to give the Warriors their first score of the second quarter and a 26-6 lead. Neither offense was done, however, as the Hawks’ Stevin Horrocks took the kickoff 71 yards for a score, and the Warriors scored with just 37 ticks left on the clock in the half on a 17 yard pass from Alex Frerichs to Dylan Brenner to give the Warriors a 34-12 lead at the half.
The only score of the third quarter came when Schumacher picked up his third touchdown of the game on a 1 yard run, giving the Warriors a comfortable 40-12 lead with one quarter left to play.
Each team scored once in the final quarter of play with the Warrior’s Rhett Dye scoring on a 5 yard dash with 3:17 left and the Hawks’ Levi Ray scoring from the three yard line for the final 48-18 score.
Jordan Houser and Levi Ray led the Hawks on the ground, while Austin Reed and Jordan Encinia led the Hawks receivers. Defensively, Stevin Horrocks and Joey Johnson were the Hawks leading tacklers with Horrocks also adding a blocked field goal attempt.
The Hawks will host Mullen on Friday, September 28 with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. With the loss to the Warriors, the Hawks fall to 1-2 on the season.
