Once again the Lady Mustangs demonstrated their never quit, never die, attitude that they possess this year, when they traveled Thursday night to face off with the Lady Warriors of Bennett County at Martin. The C team served up the first victory of the evening as they defeated the Warriors in straight sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-17. The JV team then took the floor and they won their game with set scores of 25-17, 17-25 and 15-8.
Next up – Varsity action – and action it was. Set 1 was a back and forth battle. One team would jump on top 2 or 3 points, and then the other team would come back and take control by 2 or 3 points. With the score sitting at 23-24 in favor of the Warriors, Brandi Roth stepped up to serve. With great passing and digging by Cirsten Hinn, Hali Sahr, and Morgan Sones, nice setting by Denie Jacobson and Morgan and aggressive net play be Sara Marlatt and Brittany Hoagland, Brandi served up 3 straight points to help the Mustangs win set one, 26-24.
In set two with the score tied 18-18, Sara Marlatt took the serve and then again, behind the setting and digging by Denie and Morgan and the aggressive strong net play of Brandi, Brittany and Dani Campbell, Sara served 5 straight points, including 2 aces. The Mustangs won set two, 25-20.
Set three again was a big battle back and forth, with numerous lead changes. In this set, with the score of 22-22, Morgan took the serve and, backed up by the aggressive play of her teammates, she served out the set and the Lady Mustangs won 25-22.
The Mustangs have a tough week ahead of them. On Thursday night they will host a triangular with Valentine and Alliance. On Friday they will travel to Utica, Nebraska where they will compete in an eight team tournament. The Utica-Centennial Tournament offers some great competition for the Mustangs and features teams that they don’t otherwise see throughout the year. Good luck Lady Mustangs.
