The Hawk football team picked up a big victory in Crawford on Friday with a 52-22 win over the host Rams. The victory was especially sweet considering the Hawks have played three football games in a week after squeezing in a make-up game on Monday.
The Rams struck first and quickly, scoring fifteen seconds into the game when Jamie Quinn scored on a 42 yard run from scrimmage. The Hawks got on the board four minutes later when Joey Johnson scored on a 15 yard run after the Hawks orchestrated a 54 yard drive.
A little over a minute later Joey Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game on a 35 yard run. A pass from Regg Strotheide to Austin Weyers was good for the two-point conversion and the Hawks led 14-6.
The two teams traded possessions until the Rams put together a 50 yard drive that culminated on a 22 yard pass for a touchdown. The Rams scored the two-point conversion and the two teams were tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter.
The only score of the second quarter came when Crawford scored on a 36 yard run by Jamie Quinn. The two-point conversion was good and the Rams held a 22-14 lead at the half.
The second half was all Hay Springs as the Hawks outscored the Rams 38-0 in the final twenty-four minutes. Two minutes into the third quarter, the Hawks’ Stevin Horrocks scored on a 30 yard run, and Joey Johnson scored the two-point conversion to tie the game at twenty-two.
The Hawks took the lead for good when QB Regg Strotheide found Horrocks on a 27 yard pass for the score. Four minutes later, as time ran out on the clock, Horrocks again scored on a 34 yard run. The quarterback keeper for the two-point conversion was good and the Hawks led 36-22 with one quarter left to play.
The Rams were knocking on the door with 4:06 left in the game when a Rams fumble on the Hawks 1 yard line was picked up by Horrocks who scampered 79 yards for the touchdown. Levi Ray scored the Hawks’ point after and the Hawks escaped a Rams charge.
The Hawks final score of the game came after another Rams turnover on their own 10 yard line. Ray scored from the 9 yard line and a Ray to Jordan Encinia two point conversion sealed the Hawks thirty point victory.
Defensively, the Hawks were led in the tackling department by Horrocks, John Rotness, Joey Johnson, and Jordan Houser. The Hawks also got quarterback sacks from Stevin Horrocks and John Rotness. Jordan Houser combined with Nate Letcher and Riley Abbott to also get to the quarterback three times in the game. The leading rushers for the Hawks were Horrocks and Johnson. The Hawks are now 3-4 on the season and will round out the regular season on Friday when they host the Potter-Dix Coyotes. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
