Junior Stevin Horrocks rushed for 353 yards and 6 touchdowns on 43 carries on Friday night to lead the Hay Springs Hawks to a 56-41 victory over the Potter-Dix Coyotes. The win earned the Hawks a berth in the D2 State football playoffs. The Hawks trailed the Coyotes after the first quarter 14-6 after the Coyotes scored on a 28 yard pass from Luke Johnson to Brady Knigge following a Hawks fumble. The Coyotes scored again about one minute later when Johnson hit Kyle Gorsuch on a 5 yard pass for the Coyotes second score.
Chris Ray got the Hawks on the board on the ensuing kickoff when he returned it 65 yards for the touchdown. The second quarter belonged to the Hawks when the Hawks scored on runs of 8 yards, 11 yards, and 6 yards all from Horrocks, and quarterback Regg Strotheide hit Joey Johnson on an 18 yard pass as time ran out in the half. Horrocks scored two two-point conversions and the Hawks put 28 points on the board to lead 34-14 at the half.
On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, the Coyotes Jake Johnson scored on a 51 yard run. Joey Bailey kicked the extra point to put the score at 34-21. With 9:41 on the clock, the Hawks capped off a 41 yard drive with a 11 yard touchdown run from Horrocks. Joey Johnson scored the two-point conversion and the Hawks had again pushed their lead to twenty-one points.
The Hawks orchestrated a 55 yard drive with 5:49 left in the third quarter finished off by a 7 yard run by Horrocks to give the Hawks a sizeable 48-21 lead. The Coyotes high flying offense struck with 4:34 left when Johnson again hit Brady Knigge on a 7 yard pass. The extra point attempt was no good and the Hawks led 48-27 with one quarter of football left to play. Stevin Horrocks would pick up his sixth touchdown of the game on a 76 yard run with 8:38 left in the game. Joey Johnson scored the two-point conversion for the Hawks and the Hawks led 56-27 on their way to their 4th victory of the season and a chance to play in the state playoffs.
The final two scores by the Coyotes came on 10 and 19 yard passes from Johnson to Knigge to pull the Coyotes to within 15.
Leading tacklers for the Hawks were Horrocks, Johnson and Jordan Houser. The Hawks will travel to Giltner on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. Central time first round match-up in the D2-8 man state football playoffs. The Hawks reached the playoffs in 2010 where they lost in the first round to Bertrand.
