Thursday afternoon, the #16 seeded Hay Springs Hawks traveled to the #1 seed Giltner Hornets for first round action in the D2 State playoffs. The Hawks found out quickly why the Hornets are ranked #1 in the West bracket of the D2 football state playoffs.
Giltner jumped out to a very early 20-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of a strong air game. The Hawks scored their first touchdown on a 30 yard hook and ladder from Regg Strotheide to Chris Ray to Jordan Houser in the second quarter, but the Hornets continued to overpower the Hawks, putting 50 points on the board in the second quarter to lead 70-6 at the half.
With the commanding lead, the scoring slowed down in the second half. The Hornets scored just once in the third quarter and the Hawks scored on a Stevin Horrocks 2 yard run after a 40 yard drive, while the Hornets finished the game with two more touchdowns in the fourth for a 90-14 final.
