Last December news broke that a Family Dollar Coming Soon sign was posted in Whiteclay. Construction of the business began on Thursday, July 20.
Before a construction crew broke ground in the unicorporated village, Family Dollar submitted a zoning change application to the Sheridan County Board of Commissioners. The commissioners reviewed the application on April 24. “We welcome new construction in Sheridan County,” Chairman Jack Andersen said. “I hope they will bring new customers to all businesses in Whiteclay.”
The application went before the planning commission where it was discussed for an hour and a half. They recommended to accept Family Dollar’s conditional use permit, which the commissioners accepted at the June 12 commissioners meetings.
James Krotz offered a personal statement about Family Dollar. “Welcome to Family Dollar – I’m delighted to see this business come to the Whiteclay community. I hope it serves the needs of the people of northern Sheridan County and the Pine Ridge reservation. The only thing that would improve on this happy development would be if the business were locally owned.”
The estimated cost of the project is $400,000 with the business located on the east side of Highway 87.
