Fatal rollover accident occurs south of Whiteclay

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol responded to an accident near Whiteclay on Thursday, August 17.

Jama Bourne came upon an accident and called it into authorities. “I personally didn’t see it happen, but I saw the pickup and where it crashed, [the woman] screaming for the man underneath, but more importantly how quickly alcohol can ruin a life,” wrote Bourne.

The call came in at 1:24 p.m. reporting a single-vehicle rollover accident 4 mi. south of Whiteclay and between a 1/4 mi. to 1/2 mi. east on 325th Trl. When officers arrived on scene, it appeared that the vehicle drifted off of a bridge into the north ditch and rolled. Sheriff Terry Robbins said the accident happened possibly two hours before the report came in since the road has minimal traffic and the vehicle sat in a ravine.

Two people were in the four-door Ford Explorer. Francis Rencountre, a Native American male from Rapid City, S.D., was the driver of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was taken to the Pine Ridge Hospital for non-life  threatening injuries.

The Nebraska State Patrol is handling the ongoing investigation. Alcohol was a suspected cause of the accident.
