On Saturday, September 8, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a rollover car accident near Gordon occurred. Eli Hunter, a freshman at Gordon-Rushville High School, passed away due to injuries from the accident.

According to County Attorney Jamian Simmons, “It appears the accident occurred on 190th Road about a mile east of Gordon. It appears Elijah Hunter was driving the vehicle southbound when he lost control of the vehicle, which rolled. It does not appear restraints were in use, and alcohol is not suspected at this time. Another juvenile passenger in the car sustained only minor injuries and was treated and released from Gordon Memorial Hospital. The accident is still under investigation at this time.”

Funeral services for Eli Hunter will be Friday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gordon Church of God. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Point Church cemetery south of Gordon. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 13 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home.

According to the schools, “Regular classes will not be held Friday afternoon, however the Middle School building will be open and available staff present in Rushville from 12:30-3:00 p.m. for any K-12 student who resides in or around Rushville and needs a place to go that afternoon. Likewise, the High School building will be open and available staff present for any K-12 students who reside in or around Gordon and need a place to go that afternoon. Student attendance is not mandatory. Students are asked to check in at the Office upon arrival.
