The wrestling room at Hay Springs is quite full as they head into the 2022-23 season.

Eleven student-athletes are participating this Winter, with four of them bringing experience from the season prior.

Leading the charge will be returning State Qualifier, senior Wesley Jacobs.

Jacobs won 28 matches last season and went 1-2 at the Nebraska State Championships last February.

“I believe Wesley Jacobs is on track for another great season,”said Head Coach Chuck McCance.

“He is focused on returning to State and placing there. He will be a real asset as a leader for our young team,” he added.

Other returners for the Hawks will be a trio of juniors. Jarhett Anderson (16 wins), Anthony Running Hawk (16 wins), and Chase Brunsch (8 wins) all return to the mat in green and gold.

With the increased numbers, a new threshold will be crossed  for the Hay Springs Program.

For the first time in program history, the Hawks have two girls participating.

Hayden Boles and Ava McKillip will put on the singlet this season and set the bar for young ladies in the future.

Coach McCance is excited to see where the season goes for these young ladies.

“For the first time, Hay Springs will have a Girls wrestling team,” said Coach McCance.

“It’s a real pleasure to work with these young ladies and watch them develop into great wrestlers,” he added.

An influx of freshman have also joined the roster and will provide some much needed depth.

“With the increase in numbers, the first thing is we can practice with partners close to our weights,” said Coach McCance.

“We will also be able to compete in duals and host home events to showcase our program in front of the home crowd,” he added.

The Hawks will begin their season with a tournament at Hemingford on Thursday, December 1.
