LINCOLN, Neb. - An unattended briefcase triggered a brief bomb scare at the Nebraska Capitol, but the item was later deemed safe.
The item found Tuesday afternoon delayed the start of afternoon debate in the Legislature. A Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman says troopers discovered the briefcase in the hallway just south of the legislative chambers shortly before 12:30 p.m.
Nearby offices were cleared and Capitol staff members kept onlookers restricted to the northern side of the building.
Sen. Bob Krist of Omaha says the package was left by high school student who was participating in an educational program at the Capitol.
A search of the briefcase found no hazardous devices or materials.
