W. Nebraska shooting leaves man dead, deputy injured

BIG SPRINGS, Neb. (AP) - A shooting in western Nebraska left a man dead and a deputy seriously injured.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the incident happened about 12:30 p.m. Thursday when Deuel County deputies attempted to serve arrest warrants for 66-year-old Neil S. Stretesky, of Big Springs. Shots were fired in an altercation and Stretesky and 52-year-old deputy Michael Hutchinson were taken to a hospital in Ogallala.

Stretesky was pronounced dead. Hutchinson underwent surgery and was flown to a hospital in Greeley, Colorado.

The warrants were out of Sedgwick, Colorado, and Keith County, Nebraska, and charged Stretesky with violating the terms of his bond for assault and attempted murder.

The Omaha World-Herald reports Stretesky was charged in October 2014 in Julesburg, Colorado, with beating his father with a hammer.
