Richard Garrett Prusia, 76, of Gordon, NE died Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Gordon Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 26, 1936 in Franklin, Nebr.to Clarence and Elizabeth Garrett Prusia, the youngest of eight children. Dick graduated from Franklin High School in 1954, and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he played football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He graduated from UNL in 1958 and moved to Gordon, where he met and was then married to Karen Huckfeldt. To this union of 53 years was born a daughter, Kim and a son, Scott.
Dick taught at Gordon High School from 1958-1961. While at Gordon High, he was the head basketball coach, assistant football coach, and started the varsity golf program. He also coached little league baseball.
Dick left teaching and coaching and moved to Scottsbluff, NE in 1961 to begin a long career selling life and health insurance with Woodmen Accident and Life. He was recognized as a top producer, being named to the President’s Club on several occasions. He retired from full time work in 2000 and moved his office home, but continued part time insurance sales until the time of his death. Dick was also actively engaged in farming north and east of Gordon.
Dick was always active in his community. He loved golf and served on the Gordon Golf and Country Club Board for several terms, including during the transition from the sand greens course to the current grass greens course. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and served as Church Council President. He served several terms on the Gordon School Board, and he was actively involved in the Gordon Kiwanis Club.
But his greatest love was coaching youth basketball, starting with a team in the 4th or 5th grade until they started high school. Many a weekend during the winter months was spent on the road at a basketball tournament where not only the fundamentals of basketball were taught, but valuable life lessons as well.
Dick is survived by his wife, Karen; son Scott and wife Michelle of Torrington, WY; daughter Kim and husband Tim Marlatt of Gordon; grandchildren Nick and Shelbey Prusia and Rick and Sara Marlatt; brother Elmer and Florence Prusia of Lincoln, Nebr.; sisters Dorothy Sorenson and Estelle Sorenson of Sacramento, CA, Urva Lou Frerichs of Minden, NE, and Carolyn and Dick Barber of Grand Island, Nebr.; sisters-in-law Gloria Mills of Gordon and Nancy Huckfeldt of Gering, Nebr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Grace Lutheran Church in Gordon with interment at the Gordon Cemetery. A memorial has been established at Bank of the West in Gordon.
