Mary York

Mary York, born Mary Ella Capstick to George and Anna, February 8, 1920. She was born in Rushville and lived her entire life there until her final years. Mary passed away peacefully March 21, 2013 at Gordon Countryside Care.

Her early years were lived on her parent’s farm southeast of Rushville. From early childhood she was a hard worker. At age four she helped care for her father when he was injured in a farming accident. As she grew, she helped him with the farming and developed a love of the land and of animals.

After high school graduation she attended Chadron Teacher’s College (now Chadron State College), earning a teaching credential to teach in rural one room schools in Sheridan County.

Mary taught many students prior to her marriage to Arie York in 1943. They had three children when he returned from active duty as a paratrooper during WWII. Mary stayed home to be a homemaker and mother for ten years, and then returned again to teaching. To provide for her children, she taught school during the school year and worked at the county clerk’s office during the summer.

Even though she worked two jobs outside the home and worked full time as a mother, she found time to enrich her children’s lives with summer trips to the Black Hills for history lessons, to the state capital in Lincoln, and to Denver and Ft. Collins, Colo. Her desire to educate children began with the education of her own children.

After retiring from teaching and from various jobs within the court house, she volunteered many hours at the Rushville Public Library. She also took the job of feeding any stray cat that looked hungry.

She was preceded in death by her parents and older sister Minnie.

Survivors include her younger sister Ada (Kansas), sons Michael (Rushville) and Albert (Oregon), daughter Nancy and son-in-law Ailbe (California), grandson Nathan, granddaughter Marianna and four great granddaughters.

She was a member of Morse Memorial Methodist Church in Rushville and the American Legion Auxiliary.

At her request a graveside service was held Monday, March 25, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Rushville, with Rev. Al Trucano officiating.

Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
