Virginia Lee was born September 3, 1917 at the family home in Dockery, Missouri. She was the sixth child of eleven children born to Joseph Howard Carter and Volena Belle (Rippy) Carter. Virginia grew up northeast of Kansas City, Missouri living in several small Raymore County communities calling Polo her hometown and Prairie Ridge Church her community. She completed the 10th grade, graduating from Morton High School. Following graduation, she lived with her family and worked as a cook in the Polo Public Schools. She married Rolland Schmidt on May 14, 1948 in Excelsior Springs, Mo. and moved to Gordon, Neb. Together they had two children, Ross Lee and Janet Irene. Rolly passed away in 1957 and Virginia continued managing the farm and raising their children. She started working outside the home when both of the kids were in high school. She began at the King Koin Stamp Store. In 1969 she became one of the first cooks at the Gordon High School. She purchased the Mode O’Day store in 1972 and continued until her retirement in 1985.
Family and community were very important to Virginia. She worked very hard to keep her family connected to both the Schmidt and Carter sides, taking her children to important happenings on either side of the family. Starting in 1948, she became a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant Extension Club, Mt. Pleasant Community and later her “Ladies Card Club” which started many years ago and continues on today!!
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking for family, playing card and board games, being with her family and especially being a grandma. She was quick with witty responses and enjoyed a good laugh.
