Myrtle Preuss passed away September 9, 2015 at the age of 97. She was born and raised in Gordon, Nebraska, attending public schools in Gordon. She loved school and graduated from Gordon High School in 1935. Her family had a small ranch in the Sand Hills south of Gordon, spending some of their time on the ranch, but she and her sisters mostly lived in Gordon when attending high school.
She married Stanley Preuss in 1937, and they moved to the country north of Gordon to operate “Midway”, a small country grocery and gas station. During World War ll, they moved to California where Stanley worked in the Navy Yard. After the war, they moved back to Nebraska to resume running the Midway Country Store. In 1956 they sold the Midway store and bought a business in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, serving the local Pine Ridge Reservation, and the tourist trade.
In 1968, Myrtle moved to Rapid City, South Dakota to operate a small apartment complex while Stanley remained behind in Pine Ridge to run their store there, until they could sell that business. When that was finalized, Stanley joined Myrtle in Rapid City where they lived until they moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1972. In 1974, they moved to Fort Collins. Throughout their years’ operating small businesses, Myrtle was a full-time housewife and mother…but still played a major role in the success of these businesses.
In 2013, Myrtle moved to New Mercer Commons in Fort Collins and lived there for the remainder of her life. The family deeply appreciates the amazing staff at New Mercer Commons for the compassionate care they provided over the past three years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Elizabeth Beckman; her husband Stanley in 1997; her sister Dorothy in 1998; her sister Margaret in 2005; and grandson Lynn Rotella in 2013.
She is survived by her daughter Sharon Rotella of Chandler, AZ, and son Larry Preuss of Fort Collins; four grandchildren, Douglas Rotella, Sherry Rotella Parish, Kristin Preuss Martinez, and Nathan Preuss; and six great-grandchildren, Stevie Rotella Olson, Jessica Rotella Faison, Ella Martinez, Sophia Martinez, Marisa Martinez, and Connor Parrish; and great-great grandchild Stella Olson.
