Verlene Ann Simmons, 78, of Martin, S.D. died Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015 at the Bennett County Community Hospital after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.
She was born Dec. 7, 1937 in Martin to Harry and Vera Beck. She was one of five children. Her siblings called her “Beans” and it was a nickname she had all of her life.
On Nov. 14, 2003 she married Earl Simmons. The couple lived in Martin where she enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing and keeping up with her kids and grandkids. She took great pride in her gardening and spoiling her dogs, Molly and Bud.
She was an excellent cook and prepared many meals for the family. She was a natural caretaker and an avid sports fan. She preferred reading mysteries and had a witty sense of humor. She loved people and was well loved by all who knew her.
Verlene was proceeded in death by her parents, her brothers Jack Wyckoff and Roland Beck, her son-in-law Ken Hunter, and nephew Scott Nelson.
Verlene is survived by her husband Earl, Martin; her children, Tracy Hunter, Lakeside, Neb.; Vicki (Richard) Ballard, Gordon, Neb.; Deanne (Mel) Armstrong, Ozawkie, Kan.; Nikki (Scott) Shald, Lafayette, Colo.; Jennifer (David) Ladoucer, North Platte, Neb.; Doug Simmons, Redfield; Dwight (Bill) Simmons, Bridgeport, Neb., Darcy Simmons, Aberdeen; and Delinda Simmons, Allen; two sisters, Carmen (John) Gottschalk, Omaha, Neb.; and Dee (Jim) Nelson, Rapid City; 25 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Bennett County Funeral Home.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at the Activity Center in Martin with Reverend Harold Eagle Bull officiating. Cremation is to follow.
