Helen L. Finley was born to Oscar and Christina Anderson on the family homestead near Gordon, Neb. on March 1, 1925, and passed from this life on February 25, 2019, in West Magic, Idaho, at the age of 93.
Helen was baptized and confirmed in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and remained a member of that faith until her death.
She attended a one-room country elementary school and graduated from Gordon High School in 1941.
In 1953, Helen joined the workforce and was employed as a bookkeeper for the Chevrolet dealership in Gordon. She and her family moved to Washington State in 1963, where she also was employed by various car dealerships as an office manager.
In 1974, she married Delvin “Dennis” Finley and they made their home in Centralia, Wash., until 1984 when the couple retired and moved to Deming, N.M. Family roots brought them back to Washington in 1988 and they resided in Sequim, Wash., for 10 years. Helen worked part time as a bookkeeper for a senior retirement complex.
Due to the failing health of her husband, they moved to Olympia, Wash., to be near family. After Dennis was admitted to the VA hospital in 2002, Helen made her home with her daughter, Vickie and husband, Bill where she remained until her passing. Helen was a volunteer at the American Lake VA Hospital for 5 years.
Helen loved tending to her flowers; but if you didn’t find her in the yard, you would hear the humming sound of her sewing machine. She had a passion for quilting and tried to keep up with each new arrival to the family by welcoming them with a crib quilt, or patching the knees of a toddler’s jeans; or simply stitching up a hem for a friend.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 33-1/2 years, Dennis Finley; 1 son, Dennis Gehrig; 3 brothers, Leonard, Richard (Dick) and Kenneth “Buzz” Anderson; 1 granddaughter Angela Finley; and 1 stepson, Dale Finley.
Surviving to cherish her memory are 3 daughters: Vickie (Gehrig) Thomas and husband Bill of West Magic, Idaho; Connie (Gehrig) Richmond and husband Larry of Fife, Wash., and Angela Cassedy of Ketchum, Idaho; 2 sisters: Evelyn (Anderson) Brehm of Bremerton, Wash., and Mildred (Anderson) Dugger of Winder, Ga.; 2 stepsons: Ed Finley and his wife Arnell of Bucoda, Wash.; Ted Finley and his wife Julie of Boise, Idaho; 1 stepdaughter Jody (Finley) Sisk and husband Jerry of Rochester, Wash.
Also surviving are 3 step children: Jim Cassedy and his wife Linda of Ephrata, Wash.; Judy (Cassedy) Albriktsen and husband Wade of Kent, Wash. and Jenice (Cassedy) Hawley of Hailey, Idaho; all of whom she loved and cherished from early childhood as if they were her own.
Helen has 20 grandchildren and over 25 great grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews.
