Patricia Joan Reed was born in Culver, Kansas, to Lily Irene Reed and Harold Sterling Reed on February 3, 1933, and was an only child.
The family moved to Colorado during the depression, and this is where Patty Jo, as her mother used to call her, grew up, went to school, got married and had her four children, Debbie McCoy, Scott Hewit, Carolyn Hewit Julian and Janet Sasse.
She moved to Gordon in 1984, where she resided until she passed away on the 18th of March after a sudden and acute heart attack.
Pat was an exceptionally creative and fearless individual, taking on projects most wouldn’t even consider, such as undertaking an old trailer park that was nothing but a sand lot with a lot of thorny weeds and turning it into a virtual oasis in the town, moving an old farmhouse onto the lot. She created as she went and it was remarkable the insight she had for the outcome.
Being an only child was a lonely existence at times and she loved it when her children would come visit. She never hesitated to take the drive to Denver and did it up until this last winter.
She enjoyed her home until she finally realized she could no longer handle the maintenance and made the decision on her own to downsize and go into the Villa Apartments, where she had less upkeep. Even there she couldn’t keep from creating her little landscape oasis.
She loved her little dog, Darby, and he was another appendage as she carried him everywhere. He gave her a lot of joy.
In her ecclectic way she made our family quite the mix, and we are going to miss her immensely.
While mom was always a believer, she came to know Jesus Christ through her church family at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed serving and being a part of this community and had a profound faith and abiding love for God, and it was this faith that served her later in life and through the trials of her last days.
Patricia is survived by her children: Debbie (Roger) McCoy, Scott Hewit, Carolyn Hewit Julian (Steve), Janet (Steve) Sasse; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by grandchild Mickey Henderson.
Funeral services will take place Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Gordon.
