Jerene Marie (Schmidt) Lohman of Bloomfield, NE, passed away, peacefully, on Thursday, October 13 at the age of 78, after a long struggle with chronic kidney disease.
Jerene lived in Bloomfield, NE for the past 17 years where she enjoyed her rural home, visits from nearby family, and the companionship of many pets.
Born in Grand Island, NE, Jerene was a twin to brother, Jerry Schmidt. Both were adopted in 1945 by Kenneth and Amy Schmidt of Gordon, NE. They were raised on the farm northeast of town where they both grew up riding horses, and were actively involved in 4-H and riding club. Jerene graduated from Gordon High School as valedictorian of the class of 1962, and over the years, held a variety of jobs, many for which she was the first woman to break into the field. She was the first woman telephone repairman for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, climbing telephone poles and burying phone line cable, and she was also Gordon’s first female police ffcer. Later, while living in Clear Spring, MD, she farmed and did bookkeeping.
A wonderful cook and avid baker, Jerene was well known by friends, neighbors and relatives for her excellent cooking. She loved to entertain in her home, hosting parties and preparing delicious meals for family gatherings, and treats for the congregation at the Bazile Creek Church where she attended services and had many close friends. She also befriended the nurses within the dialysis unit of Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota where, for the past 6 1/2 years, she underwent dialysis treatment three times per week, and she loved to bake treats to share with the hospital staff there.
Recently, Jerene connected with two of her biological siblings and was so grateful for those new relationships, and the opportunity to learn more about her birth parents and extended family.
Always leaning toward the eccentric, Jerene had a unique sense of humor, and no fear for living life on her own terms. She traveled and lived in many different areas, collecting experiences and friendships as she went.
Jerene’s tough talk and gritty outlook never fully masked the generous heart beneath, and she will be missed dearly.
Jerene is survived by her brother, Jerry Schmidt of Fernandina Beach, FL, sister, Kathy Wilkinson of Waverly, NE, her three daughters, Trinda Hare of Morenci, AZ; Lisa Hare, of Gordon, NE; Charlee (Lohman) Smith, of Hagerstown, MD; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and many friends.
Jerene requested no funeral, service or memorial be held, only that her cremated remains be dispersed by family members in a private ceremony.
