Monte Wayne Garner, 58, of Hyannis, died Friday, November 18, 2011 from injuries in a motor vehicle accident in rural Cherry County.
He was born in Gordon, Nebraska on August 31, 1953 to Nyal and Edythe (Hathorn) Garner. He grew up south of Lakeside, attended Lakeside Rural school and graduated from Alliance High School in 1972.
On June 21, 1975 he was united in marriage to Marina J. Dafney in Alliance. They lived in Martin, South Dakota and Lusk, Wyoming before moving to Grant County in 1981.
Monte enjoyed agriculture and working on Sandhills area ranches all of his life. Monte owned and operated Garner Contracting. Most importantly, Monte was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was an avid outdoorsman loving to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed nature and working with horses.
He is survived by his wife, Marina, his daughter, Marisa (Ron) Betson of Crawford, his son, Matthew (Mandy) Garner of Lincoln, his grandchildren, Jacob, Miranda and Amelia Betson and Miles Garner. He is also survived by his mother, Edythe Garner of Alliance, his sisters and brother, Shirley (Bruce) Herman of Joliet, Mont., Jim Garner of Libby, Mont., Sherry (John) Oliver of Gering and Debra (Calvin) Boyd of Callaway, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, his sister, Lynda Steffen and his nephew, Brad Herman. Funeral services were held November 23 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Alliance and Father Don Huber officiated. Burial was at the Alliance Cemetery.
