Michael “Mike” Edward Kearns, 62, of Mitchell passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at his home. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 26th, 2011 at the Federated Church in Mitchell with Pastor Dr. Charles Richardson officiating. Private inurnment was held at the Mitchell City cemetery preceding the service. A luncheon was held immediately after the service at the American Legion in Mitchell. A memorial has been designated to the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department for continuing education. Jones Mortuary in Mitchell is in charge of arrangements. Mike was born August 7, 1949 to Edward and Marguerite (Cavanaugh) Kearns in Rushville. He graduated from Rushville High School in 1967 and from Chadron State College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While at Chadron, he met Nancy Schneider and they were married June 4, 1971 in Rushville. They were blessed with a daughter, Keelie Nicole, and a son, Chad Michael.
Mike taught school and coached for 10 years, sold feed, farmed, and fed cattle in the area for many years, and then became a registered polysomnographic technologist in 2003. Most recently, he was a partner in Western Sleep Medicine in Scottsbluff.
Survivors include his wife Nancy, daughter Keelie and her family; Duane, Karlie, Brylie, Colby and Creighton, and son Chad and his family; Kaci and Jake, mother Marguerite Kearns of Hot Springs, sisters Betty (Don) Maberry of Rushville, Karen (Ralph) Rhoads of Alliance, Sharon Kearns of Hot Springs, brother Pete Kearns of Hot Springs, sister-in-law Adena Kearns of Alliance, father-in-law Ben Schneider of Mitchell, Neb., brother-in-law Dr. Russ(Cathy) Schneider of Estes Park, Colo., aunts Dorothy Kearns and Betty Cavanaugh, and aunt and uncle Betty and Jack Creeden, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Edward Kearns, Jr., brother Patrick Kearns, mother-in-law Helen Schneider and his grandparents.
