Margery Heyer Smith

Margery Heyer was born September 13, 1920, to Henry and Anna Thornquist Heyer at their farm home near Gordon, Nebraska. Margery had an older sister, Elaine, and a younger brother, Dean. She passed away January 23, 2020, at Grove, Oklahoma.

Margery attended the first eight grades at the Sunny Knoll School. She then attended Gordon High School and graduated in 1938. She took the Normal Training Course in high school, so out of high school she taught five years in rural schools in Sheridan County


Kenneth L. Hooper

With deepest sorrow we announce that Kenneth L. Hooper, age 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 26, 2020, at Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff, where he had resided for the last four years.

Joyce Glaze, a former resident of Gordon, passed away on December 30 in Sugar Land, Texas. Joyce Boldon Glaze was born on December 12, 1924, on the farm that her parents, Roy and Amanda Boldon, homesteaded near Oelrichs, South Dakota. Her early school days were spent in the Chadron Public Schools, where she graduated from high school and then attended Chadron State Teacher’s College. During WWII, Joyce left college to work in a munitions factory near Denver.

Ilo Eliene (Jansen) Fegler, 89, of Ogallala passed away January 11, 2020, at Indian Hills Manor Nursing Home.

Ilo was born in Rushville, Neb., on May 22, 1930, to Leo and Elma (Croxen) Jansen. They lived in a sod house in Interior, S.D., until 1935 when her mother passed away, and the family moved to Scottsbluff, Neb., where she and her sisters attended school. Michael Dean Welker

On Sunday, January 12, 2020, Mike Welker, passed away at the age of 60 at his home south of Kilgore, Nebraska. Mike was born on September 12, 1959, in Valentine, Nebraska, to Dean and Eldine (Rauer) Welker. He attended Cody-Kilgore Unified Schools and graduated in 1977. Following high school, Mike attended Mitchell Vo-Tech and graduated in 1979 with a Welding Degree.

Roxie Ann Brown

Roxie Ann Brown was born October 31, 1947, in Alliance, Nebraska, to Reid Earl McCoy and Margaret Elizabeth (Walts) McCoy. She passed away January 3, 2020, at her home in Rushville, Nebraska.

Roxie married LaVern Roy Brown at the Presbyterian Church in Rushville, Nebraska, on June 12, 1965, and spent 54 wonderful years together and they raised three girls, Bonnie, Mary and Brenda. She had four grandchildren that were her pride and joy, Michael and Steven Hamm and Allison and Katelyn


Thomas T. Strasburger

Thomas T. Strasburger, 93, of Gordon, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, at the Western Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Scottsbluff. The funeral services were held Jan. 6, 1:30 p.m. at Pleasant Point Community Church with Pastor Jason Gantz officiating. Burial at Gordon Cemetery with a fellowship followed at the Gordon Berean Church. A memorial has been established at the Western Nebraska Veteran’s Home Scottsbluff, Neb.

Bonnie Elwood

Bonnie Jean Elwood passed away from complications due to pneumonia on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019.

Bonnie was born in Rushville on Oct. 6, 1929, the daughter of Kathryn and Lloyd Tiensvold. She was raised in Rushville and was a graduate of Rushville High School. She married Norman Lyle Elwood Dec. 19, 1949.

They eventually settled in Rushville, living north of town in a big white house where countless memories were made. They raised seven children in that home, including Susan, Steven, Sheryl


Donald P. Dreyer

Donald Paul Dreyer D.V.M., age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on December 12, 2019. He was born September 18, 1943, in Rushville, Neb., to Paul and Blanche (Peterson) Dreyer.

Don grew up in Hay Springs, Neb., on the family farm and graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1961. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Dana College in Blair, Neb., in 1965 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in Fort Collins in 1969.

Maxine Elder

Mundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Maxine Elder, age 93, of Milbank, S.D., who died on December 9, 2019, at Avera Health Milbank Area Hospital.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Gordon First United Methodist Church in Gordon, Nebraska. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. and lunch will be served starting at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery following the service.

Dorothy A Evans

Dorothy A Evans, 90, died December 3, 2019, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. Dorothy, the second of seven children, was born May 8, 1929, to Adolph J and Albina E (Koupal) Novotny at home near Tabor, South Dakota. Dorothy’s family moved frequently during childhood including stops in Martin, S.D., and Gordon, Neb. In 1942, the family moved again to a farm near Batesland, S.D., where she graduated from Baron School in 1943.

Dorothy stayed in the Bennett County area working for various families


Linda Ann Hutchison

Linda Ann Hutchison was born December 22, 1954, to Carl Cox Young and Vietta Vina (Bayliss) Young, the last of six children in Martin, S.D., where she attended school. She grew up on the family farm southeast of town.
