Joseph Hu

Pastor Joseph Hu never hesitated asking the question to anyone - “Are you a Christian?” He was always eager to share Jesus with whomever he met because his life-long passion was spreading the Gospel, an urgency that was instilled in him by his lay minister grandfather who was led to the Christian faith by Swedish Lutheran missionaries in Luoyang, China, where Joseph was born. In 1949, after being chased out of his own country by the communist insurgence, Joseph escaped to Hong Kong


Gertrude "Trudy" Petersen Walgren

Funeral services will be held March 2, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Hay Springs, with Pastor Allan Wierschke officiating. Interment will be at Hay Springs Cemetery. 

Trudy Walgren, age 96, died at the Chadron Community Hospital in Chadron, NE on February 23, 2019. She was born on Sunday April 2, 1922, the youngest child of Bernhard and Lydia (Jungck) Petersen. 

Trudy was preceded in death by her husband Gene, her parents, three brothers, three sisters, and sons Stuart


Albert "Gerald" Walgren

Graveside services for Gerald Walgren will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Fairview Cemetery in Rushville with Reverend Paul Smith officiating.

Albert "Gerald" Walgren passed away on February 22, 2019, at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Hay Springs, Nebraska. 

He was born on May 11, 1924, at his parent's home southwest of Hay Springs. His parents were James Edward and Emma (Anderson) Walgren.  Gerald was the youngest of five children.

Carol May Petersen Brakeman passed away peacefully on February 8th, 2019, at her home on Downing Street in Denver, Colorado, 73 years old. She was born on August 11, 1945

Alice Marie Cantril

Alice Marie Cantril, 93 passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019, at Catholic Eldercare in Minneapolis, MN.

She was born on July 17, 1925, on the Stafford family ranch, 12 miles south of Kremmling, CO  to  Frank E. Stafford and Alice A . Smith, the youngest of 6 children in a close-knit family. On June 12, 1950, she married Richard William Cantril at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Kremmling, CO. Together they raised 5 children, were active in their community, served their church


Mary Ruth Freeman Wheeler

Over a century ago, a baby girl named Mary Ruth Freeman was born to Chris and Salina Susan Freeman in a small house near the Brazos River in Brazos County Texas. The year was 1917 and the date was October 22. She passed away on February 13, 2019, at her home in Gordon, Nebraska. She was 101 years, 3 months and 23 days old. 

At the age of 3, Ruth moved with her family to north central Texas and then on to Crosbyton, a small town in the Texas panhandle. It was here she spent her adolescent


Donna Ann Mills

Donna Ann Mills, 86, of Gordon, passed away February 16, 2019, at her home on the Niobrara river with her family by her side.

She was born to the late Daniel and Ruth Walters, April 5, 1932, in Chadron, Nebraska.   Donna spent the majority of her life in Gordon, Nebraska, after moving to Gordon at the age of 4.  She attended and graduated as Salutatorian of her class from Gordon High School in 1950 and attended Chadron State College.

Ellen Jane Madsen

Ellen Jane Madsen, 91, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, at Bella Vista Care Center in Rapid City.

Ellen was born on July 9, 1927, to Jay and Louella (Taylor) Talbot, north of Rushville, NE. She married Lloyd Earl in 1946 and to that union two children were born, Danny and Bonnie.

In 1964, she married Don Madsen. They farmed and ranched near New Underwood until Don’s death in 2003. She was a member of the New Underwood UCC and VFW Auxiliary for many years. She loved singing and was

Kathryn Ann Johnson, 83, of Gordon, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at Gordon Countryside Care.    She was born June 3, 1935, on the Olds family farmstead northwest of Gordon, Nebraska.  She was the only child of Lester I. and Verna S. (Johnson) Olds. Kathryn attended Lone Pine rural school near her home through the 8th grade, along with farmstead cousins, Marilyn and Carmen Olds.  She boarded in town with the Bill Davis family during her freshman year. Karen Lee

Karen Lee, 76, passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.

Karen Colleen Watson was born on February 26, 1942 to Donald and Cleo (Fuller) Watson in Grant, NE.  She attended country school, later went to school in Brule, NE, and then graduated from Ogallala High School in 1960.  She was active in 4-H, raised sheep, and she excelled in sewing.

Karen met Dale in the summer of 1959 while she worked at Dairy Queen in Ogallala, NE with Dale’s sister
