Randy M. Secrest

Randy Marshal Secrest, 70 years of age, of Bertrand, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska.  Randy was born on August 19, 1950, in Gordon, Nebraska, the second of two sons born to Archie and Vera (Wolkins) Secrest. 

On August 21, 1982, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Martha “Marty” Trumble and to this union the couple were blessed with three children: Bo, Jessica, and Kacy.



Lester James Thayer

Lester James Thayer, 78, of Merriman, Nebraska, passed away on November 4, 2020, after a short illness.

He was born to parents James Eli Thayer and Maude Mae Swick, on August 19, 1942, in Newport, Nebraska, the fifth of six children.

Lester married Verla Clausen on April 17, 1961, in Rushville, Neb. To this union six children were born: Verlene, Verna, LeAnn, Leslie, Cassie, and Malena.  For the majority of their marriage they lived in Merriman, where Lester worked for the Cherry County


Ilene Harriet (Preble) Kubo

Funeral services for Ilene H. Kubo were held on Friday, November 6, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska, with Dr. Russ Seger officiating. Burial will follow at Hay Springs City Cemetery in Hay Springs, Nebraska. A visitation was held on Thursday, November 5, 2020, from 5-8 p.m. at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska. 

Ilene was born on March 22, 1932, to Charles A. and Wanda A. (Myers) Preble.

Ilene graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1950.



Clayton and Doris Tallon

Clayton Tallon passed away peacefully at Pioneer Manor on October 24, 2020. Clayton was born on October 17, 1932, to Thomas and Katie (Skoda) in Rushville, Neb.

Clayton was raised on the ranch 12 miles north of Rushville by his grandparents Charlie and Bessie Skoda. He attended the Craven Creek School and rode his horse five miles each way. He moved to Rushville when he entered the 7th grade to live with his mother and graduated in 1950.

Joann Anderson

Barbara Joann, eldest daughter of Paul Sydow and Lizzie Wilson Sydow was born February 25, 1935, at the home of her cousin Carrie and Louis Reeves at Whiteclay, Nebraska. She passed away at her home in Rushville on October 27, 2020.

Her family lived at Oglala, S.D., where she started school in September 1941. In 1945, the family moved to Rushville, Neb., where she finished the eighth grade in 1949. Due to the failing health of her grandfather, they moved to Oregon where she finished her


Royce Perrett

Royce W. Perrett of rural Wibaux recently passed away at the age of 96.  He was born in the Nebraska Sandhills on December 4, 1923, and died on October 10, 2020, in Billings, Montana, following an ATV accident.

He was a true American cowboy and cattle rancher, as well as a WWII Navy veteran, a Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star officer, 4-H leader, rodeo performer/board member/timer, loving father of three children and a devoted husband to Nell (Andersen) for 70 years.

Mary Ellen (Kearns) Ott

Mary Ellen (Kearns) Ott, 74, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away October 24, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born August 15, 1946, in Hay Springs, Nebraska, to Eugene and Betty (Blum) Kearns. She married Jon Lloyd Ott on December 4, 1965, in Rushville, Nebraska. She was a very loving wife, mother, and nana to her husband, children, and grandchildren. Mary spoiled her grandchildren with many water fights and marshmallow wars that took place in her home. Donald I. Roth

Donald I. Roth passed away peacefully in his home in Gordon, Neb., on September 16, 2020, at the age of 101 years. He is buried at the Merriman Memorial Cemetery with military honors for his service in WWII. 

Don was born on July 13, 1919, in Hayes County, Neb., to Selby and Cora Roth. He was the last survivor of their five children: Nellie Ervin (Ernest); Dorothy O’Neil (Bernard); and infant Harry; Wray Roth (Hazel).

Gary Robert Hollstein

Gary Robert Hollstein, 72, passed away peacefully at Bickford Assisted Living in Sioux City, Iowa, on October 9, 2020. He was surrounded by his wife, his children, and many dedicated long-time caregivers at Bickford. Gary died of Covid-19. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date when family and friends can safely gather in Western Nebraska.

Leonard Leroy Kearns

Leonard Leroy Kearns, age 74, was born July 9, 1946, in Seattle, Washington, to Mark and Maxine (Hindman) Kearns. He passed away October 5, 2020, at his home.

Leonard graduated from Rushville High School, Rushville, Neb., in 1964. The following fall he enrolled in Denver Automotive Institute and graduated in 1965.

He joined the US Army on January 3, 1966, and was honorably discharged December 26, 1968. He served in both Germany and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star while in

Burial were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Geddes, S.D.
