Ray named Outstanding Wrestler

The Hawk wrestling team finished the Garden County Invitational Wrestling tournament with two champions and two runner-up finishes Saturday to finish 5th as a team.
The Hawks Levi Ray and Stevin Horrocks finished first in their respective weight classes and Chris Ray and Joey Johnson finished up in the runner-up position.
In the 120 lb. weight class Chris Ray won his first round match by technical fall over Brennan Toner of Perkins County and his second and third round matches my decision over Connor Matthews of North Platte and Colin Fleecs of Sutherland before losing a 12-6 decision to Dakota Swires of Bridgeport in the finals.
Levi Ray received a bye in his first round and beat Marc Cinnoco by in in just 25 seconds in the quarterfinals before winning a tight 16-15 decision over Trey Johnson of Perkins County to advance to the finals. In the finals Ray defeated previously unbeaten Chandler Tyan of Sutherland by a score of 8-4 for the championship in the 126 lb. weight class. That championship win earned Levi Ray the Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament.
In the 138 lb. weight class, Joey Johnson won his first two matches by decision over Seth Rudy of Morrill and Drew Smith of North Platte before pinning Rio McGinley of Garden County in 57 seconds to advance to the championship match against Drew Riggs of Maxwell. In the championship match, Riggs won by major decision over Johnson 10-2 to give Johnson the runner-up medal.
In the 220 lb. weight class, Stevin Horrocks received a first round bye before pinning Zane Gallegos of Bayard and winning a 7-4 decision over David Gifford of Banner County to advance to the championship match against Levi Peterson of Stapleton/McPherson County. In the championship match Horrocks won a nail-biting 1-0 decision.
Other Hawks that wrestled but didn’t place were Jake Johnson in the 132 lb.class, Kolten Marx in the 160 lb. class, and Jordan Houser in the 180 lb. class.
