The Hay Springs Hawks wrestlers won two individual championships, had two runner-up finishes and one bronze medal on the way to finishing 2nd out of 13 in the team race on Saturday at the Red Cloud, South Dakota Invitational.
Chris Ray pinned his way to the championship in the 120 lb. class before losing a 14-3 decision to Dominick Schooler of Hill City to finish 2nd in the finals.
Levi Ray won by pin over Kaylor Pinner of Philip, Blake Jensen and Hunter Lewis of Custer, and Shane Philips of Pine Ridge before defeating Dick Smallwood of Pine Ridge in the finals by a score of 17-1 for the Hawks first title on the day in the 126 lb. weight class.
Joey Johnson finished 2nd in the 132 lb. weight class after losing a heart stopping 4-3 match in the championship to Cody Ghents of Rapid City Stevens. Johnson made it to the championship match by pinning Mitch Mansfield of Sioux County, Riley Simmons of Hot Springs, and DJ Searby of Todd County before winning a 4-2 decision over Chasen Cole of Custer.
In the 138 lb. weight class Jake Johnson went 2-3 on the day and finished 3rd after winning his first match 19-12 over Tabin Elmore of Custer and by pinning Conrad Good Voice of Todd County in his second match, before dropping his final three matches.
The second individual championship for the Hawks was Stevin Horrocks in the 220 lb. class. Horrocks won his first three matches by pin over opponents from Philip, Red Cloud, and Pine Ridge and won a 7-1 decision over Rob Stover of Pine Ridge to make it to the championship match. In the championship, Horrocks pinned Mike Murray in just 52 seconds to take the title.
Other Hawks that wrestled but didn’t place were Kolten Marx in the 160 lb. weight class and Jordan Houser in the 170 lb. weight class. The Hawks will be in action again on February 2, when they travel to a meet at Southeast Wyoming. This will be the Hawks final regular season tournament before Districts.
