The Gordon-Rushville Lady Mustangs played their last home game of the season when they hosted the Morrill Lions on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs came away with a lopsided victory, defeating the Lions 63-19.
The Lady Mustangs used full-court pressure and sticky half-court defense to flummox the Lions. The defensive pressure held the Lions to six first quarter points and just three second quarter points.
Meanwhile, the Mustang offense was firing on all cylinders as they scored 15 in the first quarter, then exploded for 25 points in the second, with eight different Mustangs finding the hoop. The half ended with the Lady Mustangs holding a commanding 40-9 lead.
The Mustangs dropped their full-court press after halftime, but continued their strong half-court defense, allowing just three Morrill field goals in the second half. The Lady Mustang seniors went out in style as each was saluted for their hard work, coming off the floor one at a time throughout the fourth quarter. The younger Mustangs closed the game out handily as the final score settled at 63-19.
Senior Sara Marlatt again led the way for the Mustangs with 17 points, Deni Jacobsen scored 10, Brandi Roth scored 9, Dani Campbell 8, Morgan Sones and Hali Sahr 5, Brittany Hoagland and Ashton Sasse 3, Kylee Giles 2, and Cali Mulcahy 1.
The Lady Mustangs will face the Chadron Cardinals in district action on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. in Alliance. Look for results at www.sheridancountyjournalstar.net/
