Four Hawks and four Mustangs will be travelling to Omaha next week to compete in the state track meet May 17-18.
At the District D-11 meet in Creek Valley, Wednesday, May 8, the Hay Springs Hawks competed well, with both the boys and girls teams finishing 6th, and each qualifying two for state.
Michaela Metcalf qualified in two events, finishing second in the long jump with a jump of 13’ 11.75”, and second in the triple jump with a distance of 31’ 2.75”.
Christian Bila was the Hawks’ other female to qualify, taking first in the shot put with a throw of 34’ 1.0”.
On the boys side, John Rotness finished second in the high jump with a height of 5’ 10”.
David Encinia was the Hawks’ fourth state qualifier, finishing second in the 3200 meter run in 11:42.0.
The Mustangs are also sending two boys and two girls to the state meet after both teams finished 8th at the District B-6 meet in Scottsbluff on Thursday.
Sara Marlatt finished third in the discus with a throw of 119’ 0”.
Dani Wellnitz finished second in the girls 3200 meter run with a time of 11:57.86.
On the boys side, Lemur Gardner qualified with a third place finish in the discus, throwing 142’ 11”.
Gary Kaplan was the final state qualifier, finishing fifth in the 3200 meter run in a time of 10:18.73.
