The Sheridan County High School rodeo team competed in three rodeos last weekend in Nelson and Grand Island. There were two rodeos in Nelson and one in Grand Island. After all three rodeos the top five contestants in each event was invited to compete in the Showcase of Champions at the Nebraska State Fair. It is special to compete in front of the State Fair crowd, many of which have never seen a rodeo.
At the first rodeo in Nelson, Jessica Bragg had a nice goat tying run and was fourth with a time of 8.44 seconds. The event was won by Megan Turek of St. Paul with a time of 7.72 seconds. Charmayne Strong was sixth in the pole bending with a time of 21.925 seconds. The event was won by Brandy Schaak of Hyannis with a time of 21.271 seconds.
At the second rodeo in Nelson, Charmayne placed in three events. She was ninth in the breakaway calf roping with a time of 8.25 seconds. The event was won by Libby Winchell of Scottsbluff. She was seventh in the goats with a time of 9.06 seconds and Jessica was ninth with a time of 9.14 seconds. The event was won by Maddee Doer of Creighton with a time of 7.88 seconds. Charmayne was third in the pole bending with a time of 22.789 seconds. The event was won by Delynn Strand of Amelia with a time of 22.154 seconds. Cody Darnell and his pardner Riley Wakefield of O’Neill won the team roping that day with a quick time of 7.72 seconds.
At the rodeo in Grand Island Jessica placed ninth in the goat tying with a time of 9.00 seconds. The event was won again by Maddee Doer with a quick time of 7.2 seconds. Charmayne placed again in the pole bending finishing fourth with a time of 22.342. The event was won by Delynn Strand again with a time of 21.788 seconds. Cody and Riley were second in the team roping with at time of 7.88 seconds. The event was won by Reece Weber of Valentine and Tate Mathis of O’Neill with a rapid time of 4.88 seconds. Brock Henry placed fourth in the steer wrestling with a time of 7.69 seconds. The event was won by Devin Dibbern of Amherst with a time of 5.13 seconds. Brock only competed at Grand Island.
After three rodeos the times and scores were tabulated and the top five contestants in each event were invited back for the Showcase of Champions. Garrett Shadbolt competed in the bareback and saddle bronc riding, Jessica Bragg in the goat tying, Charmayne Strong in the pole bending and Cody Darnell in the team roping. Cody and his pardner Riley won the team roping and were the champions of the weekend. Jessica placed 4th in goat tying. Tough broncs, goats and tipped poles cost the other contestants. Way to go Team Sheridan County!
