The Gordon-Rushville Lady Mustang basketball team is peaking at the right time. The Mustangs won on both Friday and Saturday nights and have now won 4 of their last 5 games heading into sub-district play.
The Mustangs posted a dominant performance against the Bridgeport Bulldogs in their final home game of the season on Friday night and left no doubt as to who was the stronger team. The Mustangs led 12-2 after one quarter and led 26-8 at halftime. Both teams had trouble scoring in the third quarter, but Gordon-Rushville expanded their lead to 31-11 to start the fourth quarter. The Mustangs put it on cruise control in the last eight minutes and rolled to a 46-24 win. Josie Perez scored 22 points to lead the way for the Mustangs and Kenna Campbell scored 10. Dani Campbell scored 4, Ashton Sassee, 3, Hali Sahr, Brianna Plenty Wounds, and Paige Schultz each scored 2, and Denie Jacobsen added 1.
The Mustangs traveled to Morrill on Saturday night for a rematch of the first round of the WTC tournament. The Mustangs won that first-round game 57-48, and the Lions came into the game looking for revenge. It was much closer the second time around, but the Mustangs squeaked out a 51-48 victory as they notched their second weekend with back-to-back wins. The Mustangs’ only blemish in this five game stretch was the WTC championship loss to the Mitchell Tigers.
The Mustangs will face the Chadron Cardinals in the first round of sub-district action on Tuesday, February 18 in Alliance.
