Darnell and Strong do well at National Finals Rodeo

After a week of competition that featured more than 1500 contestants from all across the United States, Canada, and Australia, the National High School Finals Rodeo results are in.

During the first performance of the NHSFR in Rock Springs, Wyoming, Cody Darnell, from Gordon, Nebraska tied his calf in 9.27 seconds. His time was fast enough to win the performance.  After six performances and 180 tie down ropers, Cody’s time held for a 4th place finish in the first go round.  He received a buckle and a $100 college scholarship.  Cody also competed in the team roping with Riley Wakefield from O’Neill, Nebraska.  They were 21st  in the first go round with a time of 9.58 seconds. 

Cody Darnell tied his second calf in 10.62 seconds which placed him 17th in the go round.  He qualified for the short go, which is the top twenty after the two go rounds, with a time of 19.89 seconds on two runs. In the short go round Cody tied his calf in 8.82 seconds which place him 5th in the short go.  Cody’s total time on three runs was 28.71 seconds which placed him 3rd in the nation. Cody received a buckle and a $500 college scholarship.  The tie down roping was won by Cooper Martin from Kansas with a time of 26.12 on three calves.

Charmayne Strong from Rushville also competed in the NHSFR in the pole bending and the goat tying.  Charmayne hit a pole in the first round giving her a time of 26.461 with the penalty.  In the goat tying she had a time of 9.16seconds.

In the second go round Charmayne had a good time of 21.147 in the pole bending and a time of 15.03 in the goat tying. 

Nebraska had seven contestants qualify for the top twenty short go. The other top twenty from Nebraska include Seth Cumpton from Lewellen – tied for 8th place in the boy’s cutting, Brook Jamison form Ashby – finished 12th in the breakaway roping, Brandy Shaack from Hyannis – finished 13th in the breakaway roping, Wyatt Gewinner from Weeping Water – placed 10th in the bareback riding, Rowdy Moon from Sargent  - finished 16th in the bareback riding, Cord Hesseltine from Halsey – finished 20th in the bareback riding.  Tanner Freeman from Dunning- finshed 16th in the steer wrestling.  The Nebraska team finished 13th overall.
