Tuesday, September 25th, found the Lady Mustangs traveling to Chadron to, once again, meet up with the Chadron Lady Cardinals for the 3rd time in 2 weeks. This match was a make-up match from August 30th that was postponed because of fires. The C team and JV teams started off the evening action. Both teams were defeated in 2 close sets by their Chadron counterparts.
When you play a team that is as strong and talented as Chadron is this year, 3 times in 2 weeks it is really hard to be pumped up for that competition, but the Lady Mustangs took the floor and displayed the never die attitude that they possess this year. The girls played with fire and desire (maybe it was helped by the foot attire of Coach Campbell and you’ll have to ask one of the girls for that story)!! In sets 1 and 2 the Mustangs worked hard but the Cardinals came out victorious winning with scores 25-15 and 25-9.
Set 3 was exciting from the 1st serve. The Mustangs and Cardinals see-sawed back and forth throughout the entire set. In this set Sara Marlatt, Brittany Hoagland, Dani Campbell, Brandi Roth and Cali Mulcahy had some great net play while Cirsten Hinn and Hali Sahr had some super digs and passes up to the setters Morgan Sones and Denie Jacobson. Mustangs won a very exciting set 3 by the score of 30-28.
In set 4 the Cardinals were able to outplay the Lady Mustangs, taking set 4 with a score of 25-13, thus winning the evening match 3 sets to 1.
While the Mustangs may have lost, they definitely left the gym knowing they had played well and had done something that only one other team had done prior to the evening’s match and that was to beat Chadron 1 set. The Cardinals, who are rated number 5 in the state with a record of 15-0, have won all their matches in the minimal number of sets except for losing 1 set to Sidney and now 1 set to The Gordon-Rushville Lady Mustangs. Coach Campbell had this to say about the Tuesday night game, “I was much more pleased with what we did against Chadron tonight. We stepped up our game in sets 2, 3, 4. We cut down on errors and communicated better on the floor. The third set was pretty exciting and the girls fought hard for every point. They beat us 3-1, but it was a moral victory for us after Saturday’s tournament in Mitchell. We needed to come out and play all aspects of the game better and I thought we did. We have a lot of work to do but I think this will give the girls a taste of what they are capable of when we put it all together and do things the way we have been taught and are asked to do, more so than doing it the easier way which doesn’t work! They know their responsibilities and fundamentals, it’s again just being self-disciplined to do it all the time instead of just part of the time.”
